ESSEC MiM vs ESCP MiM — Italian guy (non-French speaker)

Got into ESSEC MiM, still deciding between that and ESCP MiM.

Quick context: Italian, zero French (just the Duolingo Pigeon), already accepted for a MSc Commodity Trading in Geneva too, but I have to find a Traineeship, so i had to decide what to do.

  • ESSEC seems more prestigious in France, but I don't speak French and I'm not staying in France. Feels like buying a Ferrari to drive it in a city with no roads.
  • ESCP has the multi-campus thing going (Paris, Berlin, London, Madrid) which at least sounds more useful for someone who'll never conjugate a verb in French.
  • Does the ESSEC brand actually travel outside France, or is it mostly a Paris thing? And is ESCP's international setup as good in practice as it looks on the website?

I love commmodity trading but my aim is also Financial Markets. I know the MiFs are better for this field, I appllied to ESSCE and ESCP MiF but I'm not that strong lol.

Anyone gone through either and ended up in trading / commodities / derivatives? Would love to hear from people who actually lived it.

Which one?

yes that is what he will mean

ESSEC > ESCP in Paris but I have been seeing crazy ESCP growth lately

would still take ESSEC given the historical French rankings being HEC > ESSEC > ESCP

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. ESSEC vs. ESCP Reputation:

    • ESSEC is generally considered slightly more prestigious than ESCP in France, but its strength is heavily tied to the French market. If you're not planning to stay in France and don't speak French, the ESSEC brand might not carry as much weight internationally.
    • ESCP, on the other hand, has a strong international appeal due to its multi-campus structure (Paris, Berlin, London, Madrid). This setup can be particularly advantageous for someone like you, who doesn't speak French and values international exposure.
  2. Language Barrier:

    • ESSEC's campus is located outside Paris, and the program's prestige is deeply rooted in the French ecosystem. Without French proficiency, you might find it challenging to fully leverage the ESSEC network.
    • ESCP's multi-campus model allows you to study in different cities, which could help you build a more diverse network and avoid the language barrier in France.
  3. Career Goals in Commodities/Trading/Financial Markets:

    • For financial markets, MiF programs are indeed stronger, but since you've already applied and are considering MiM, ESCP's international exposure might give you better access to global opportunities.
    • ESCP's multi-campus structure could also provide you with access to different financial hubs like London, which is crucial for trading and derivatives roles.
  4. Practical Considerations:

    • ESCP's international setup is often praised for its flexibility and exposure to multiple markets. However, the actual value depends on how well you utilize the opportunities (e.g., internships, networking events, and alumni connections in each city).
    • ESSEC's prestige might be more beneficial if you were targeting roles in France or French-speaking regions, but for someone aiming for international markets, ESCP's structure might align better with your goals.

Recommendation:

Given your background (Italian, non-French speaker) and career aspirations in commodities/trading/financial markets, ESCP MiM seems like the better fit. Its international setup aligns well with your goals, and it avoids the limitations of ESSEC's France-centric reputation. However, make sure to actively leverage the multi-campus opportunities and network aggressively in key financial hubs like London.

Essec is also good in apprenticeship model which keeps your degree cheap. But yeah for finance ESCP generally has an advantage

Prestige wise they're neck and neck in France.

But Escp has recently overtaken Essec to take the #2 spot in a majority of rankings, even national ones (L'étudiant, Figaro etc.)

For London I'd say ESCP has an advantage though.

If you were French and came from prépa I'd have said Essec but since you're international and don't speak a word of French I'd lean towards ESCP.

Both are really good business schools and will open doors.

Just an observation from a small sample size, as someone who went to do 4 interviews for London SA last year I came across escp and hec students but none from Essec.

Funnily none of them were French..

Really? Yeah some ESCP alumni told me that the Career Fair ESCP programs are better, especially for finance, as they also have campuses in London. It provides a better exposure I think

ESSEC better than ESCP in any perspective in term of prestige - France is a rigid education system

ESSEC is good for flexible graduation system - you can extend graduation to 4 years and not traditional 3 years to do internships

However, ESCP may provide you the opportunity to study in London that can make you eligible for PSW visa to work there if you do not have rights to work in UK

Sure most BBs sponsor their interns, but not really for all funds/MMs. If you want to work in London and not at the BB level candidate then ESCP is considerable

Essec is 1/3rd French, 1/3rd Asian, and another 1/3rd is African. Escp is like 40-50% Italian if I remember correctly. I think the network effects are much stronger for you at ESCP. There's so many of Italian, Escp alumni in London its crazy

honestly I do not really care the difference of the two - I am neither of them so no conflict of interests
Would say the real top notch people are Oxbridge bachelors breaking into IB at 21, and they are most liked in all BB/EBs. All French universities fall behind them. Would never say ESCP has crazy number of people in London

Well of course.. Oxford is one of the oldest universities in the world, ingrained in the British culture and the other is a business school with a campus there for a few decades. How is it a good comparison?

In terms of French business schools, HEC and Escp have more alumni in London than Essec, Which isn't to say Essec is a bad school, they simply went in the APAC direction strategically like insead, which I believe is paying off well.
