Excel External Links: Good or Bad practice?
i.e. linking one cell in one workbook to another cell in another workbook.
Interested in getting your take on the question. Simple replies with type of banks you worked at (BB, MM, etc.) and/or their names, current title, and a quick good/bad statement would be ideal. Thank you!
I would answer: MM, VP, bad - external links break to often / are a mess to maintain.
I’ve been told to avoid external linking unless absolutely necessary.
BB, SA/Incoming Analyst, bad - I would have to link to comp files for a good amount of pitches, so I would just use indirect references. We were instructed to do this instead of having external links.
Bad. My VP got pretty annoyed when a file collapsed due to having a load of links to external files.
Terrible, never do it. If you have to pull from a comps set for example, copy the output page as values into a new sheet and reference that instead of linking externally.
