Feeling like wasting time working in IB
I know I sound like a fucking pussy, but I feel like I'm wasting my life away working this "prestigious" corporate job.
Long thought IBD is the ultimate dream, only to find out that I don't really learn the ins and outs of companies, don't put that much time "understanding strategic rationale" or "developing high-level strategies" for clients. I'm doing a lot of bitch PPT work, crunch some super random numbers in Excel, and managing processes that often seem to be rather tedious.
The word I'm looking for is soul-sucking. I now know why fellow monkeys refer to this job as soul sucking.
Why do I bear with all that corporate bullshit, let incapable brainless shitheads give me instructions on what I need to do with my life?
Why do you?
LOL
for the money
Exit opps. Also, no job is going to be that intellectually stimulating - can't think of a single finance job that doesn't involve tedious crap and random number crunching
tech at a startup is intellectually stimulating
lol no
Not at entry-level, unless you're like the fifth employee or something. And coding all day is just as bad as playing number monkey all day
If you’re one of the founders or early hires, yeah, but if you’re just some software coding monkey, nah
"Change the squares with rounded edges instead of square edges"
Can't think about any other job more intellectually stimulating
corp dev at tech doesnt sound too bad i think..
the fact that you were expecting something different is surprising lol
10000%
i nevered expected to be involved in commercial decisions or negotiations or the actual exciting work when i joined but man i did not anticipate the shit we do to be this soul crushing and mind numbing, the real transferrable skills ive gotten so far is making slides pretty lol
Too real it hurts
Wtf were you expecting? Your fault for chasing this “prestige” and thinking banking would be different than any other office job
Every day but not sure what else would pay near as well.
Who cares about your soul when you can have money? Just grind it out for a decade and you’ll have enough for a lean retirement. Two decades and you can enjoy a fat retirement. ‘Purpose’ and ‘Meaning’ is overrated and it’s likely you’ll find even less of those things in your run-of-the-mill 9-to-5 F500 corporate job.
i'd argue you can find purpose and meaning in life outside of work when you actually have time to do things that don't include work, which you'd have at a 9-5. not exactly what OP is asking, but think it would help in life in general.
Yeah no thanks... Chances are on your F500 salary you won't be able to afford rent in a central location and your company won't pay for your meals. So every evening after work is 1 hour commute followed by preparing dinner. Sounds more exhausting than IB tbh.
I mean it really comes down to what you value at the end of the day. Do you enjoy making more money than your peers but don't mind giving up your personal freedom and at any moment an email could ruin your weekend? Or do you enjoy having visibility and the ability to make plans on weeknights, weekends, and not get disturbed when you take a vacation? Nothing is black and white but honestly the trade-off comes down to a little extra $ that you probably won't spend anyway vs. autonomy. Have seen both sides being in corp dev now and there are definitely positives and negatives to both.
OP, I hear your concern and it's not uncommon. Personally, I remember coming out of undergrad and going to IB with tons of excitement only to learn that I was basically admin on deals and started getting jaded to the whole process. Also--and you probably gathered this--most jobs are like this. There's never a greener side just different shades of brown.
A couple of personal 'whys'
- Knowing my first job was a potential means to my desired ends
- Finding opportunities to learn valuable things
- Network
- Treating 'corporate speak' and 'corporate BS' as a game where I was just a professional player and not a personal one
- Sifting out the bad employees from the good ones and aligning with them
- Getting surgical on my exit ops
Some people may say 'just keep your head down' and/or 'do it for the money' and--frankly--those are pretty valid pieces of advice for someone early in his or her career. Just don't let it overtake--or worse become--your personality.
Not sure if that helps you at all, but my 2 cents.
i don't bear with it. i'm quitting soon lmao
Where you going?
corp finance job that pays me 50% of what i make now. i'll actually get to live my life though. 40 hours a week and fully remote. couldn't be more excited
Disregard females, acquire currency
At a junior level IB is like 10% brains and 90% how much effort you’re willing to give
Agree with your sentiments. Fully feel the same way myself. Some people in this thread are boneheads saying you can't live a good life with lower pay than IB.
Personally at a cross-road whether this career track IB -> PE is right for me or do I want to do something more chill like Corp Dev.
