Female Asian D3 athlete?? How much will this help
Currently a rising sophomore at a Top-3 liberal arts college. I do a D3 sport but the sport is quite niche where my team competes against D1 and D3 schools. My training schedule is practically the same as a D1 athlete of my sport at Yale.
I was wondering given my circumstance of being a female Asian student athlete would be enough of a leg up to make up for my mediocre 3.33 GPA. My school is known for grade deflation, if that's even something to be considered.
I'm mostly thinking of applying to sophomore and diversity focused programs.
Not so much the athlete part, but being a woman lets you do diversity programs at least, which gives you a step up. Although I would say being Asian would negatively impact your chances, much like college admissions. Maybe reach out to any past athletes you know for networking. It’ll never make up for a subpar GPA (there are tons of athletes with 3.5+) but at least you have another year to work it up.
Is there an athlete alumni network? So often there is and it can be very valuable. It may not be formal and word of mouth but best to ask your teammates, coaches, recent alums that you know. Also may be worth googling alums or people from the sport to see if anyone is in the industry and then proactively reach out.
For instance I know at least in my day the Lax Bros helped each other out immensely...and yes it helped people overlook GPA. It has been my observation that people will overlook GPA if you get highly recommended and are an athlete (Ie. Seen as a good smart hard working person etc).
Good Luck
I am assuming you go to a NESCAC and probably play squash. If that is the case, I would honestly just try to network with other athletes from the NESCAC and alumni from your school.
She specifically said top-3 and known for grade deflation, obviously Swarthmore. Should take classes at Penn and network with people there.
Being an athlete is never a bad thing, IMO.
But your biggest differentiator honestly is being a woman - pretty sure every bank has a female-specific or general diversity pool women qualify for which helps get a foot in the door.
