First Internship !

I just got an offer to intern at BNY Mellon for summer 2025 for its Finance role but it is not IB. Is there anyway I could do to utilize this internship so I break into IB ? Am I off to a good start ? What would you do if you was in my shoes ?

First of all, congratulations on securing your internship at BNY Mellon! It’s a great opportunity, good job.

Regarding breaking into investment banking (IB): As a rising junior, your 2025 summer internship will be the last experience you can showcase on your resume before applying for full-time positions. If you don’t secure a full-time offer through a Summer Analyst program in the IB division, transitioning into IB later in your career is extremely difficult (but not impossible).

One common pathway for breaking into IB later is to consider pursuing a master’s degree. This route not only gives you another chance to apply for IB internships (such as during the summer of 2026) but also positions you to secure a full-time offer based on that internship experience.

If this is your first finance internship, seriously think about a master’s program to enhance your qualifications and open up additional opportunities in the IB field.

At the end of the day, anything is possible if you want it bad enough. Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, that’s entirely up to you. Good luck brother.
