First time here | Need help with getting an interview

Hey everyone,

I'm a junior at Harvard Extension concentrating in Business management. Looking for tips on how to get an interview for summer 2020. Also open to ideas for what to do over the summer.

Thanks

  1. Find the top places you want to work for or do what you want to do
  2. See if they are hiring on their website
  3. Go on LinkedIn, look up the company, and see if you have any mutual connections with someone there
  4. Cold call/email asking if they have time to have a quick chat
  5. If you were able to apply on their website mention that, if you weren't able to than ask if they know of any opportunities
  6. At the end of your talk tell them how great it and you learnt a lot. Ask if there is anyone else they would recommend talking to.
  7. Rinse and repeat

I'm sure there are more detailed explanations out there, but following these general steps will help you get your foot in the door. Also talk to your programs career office if available, may be able to connect you with some alumni.

abiderguy gave you great advice; technical skills/role specific knowledge and general acumen/aptitude/intellect matter but all those without interpersonal skills and relationships with people in the industry will often leave you up Schitt's Creek by yourself with no paddle. Only thing I'd add is bite the bullet and ante-up for LinkedIn Premium; it's not that much money and, even at a higher price point, the additional access granted for Premium members is well worth it. Once you do that, do an advanced search looking for 2nd order contacts of your existing top contacts filtered by the industries/firms you most want to work in/at. Reach out to you existing contacts who have folks you'd like to connect with and ask for an intro (if you have that type of relationship with them - if not, sack up and cold call/InMail/email them "you miss 100% of the shots... you get the gist).

Rinse & Repeat
