Formula box keyboard navigation problem

When I type formula in A1, say I would like it to be =C40+C41. I select C40 but if I want to move down to C41, Excel automatically goes back to A1 and I need to go through all the cells again to choose C41. What can I do to stop going back to A1 and just stay in C40 after I hit the "+", so that I can then just go down one cell to C41?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a solution to your problem:

When entering a formula in Excel and you want to navigate between cells without being taken back to the original cell, you can use the following steps:

  1. Start typing your formula in A1: =C40+
  2. Select C40: Use the arrow keys to navigate to C40.
  3. Press F2: This will allow you to edit the cell directly without jumping back to A1.
  4. Use the arrow keys: After pressing F2, use the arrow keys to move to C41.
  5. Complete your formula: Finish typing your formula by adding C41.

This method ensures that you stay in the cell you are editing and can easily navigate to the next cell without being taken back to the original cell.

Additionally, you can use the mouse to click on the cells directly if you prefer not to use the keyboard for navigation. This can sometimes be quicker and avoids the issue of jumping back to the original cell.

If you frequently encounter this issue, consider using the F2 key more often to enter edit mode directly in the cell you are working on. This can streamline your workflow and reduce frustration.
