Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights into full-time (FT) hiring for investment banking (IB):
General FT Hiring Trends:
Full-time recruiting in IB is often limited because most analyst classes are filled through summer internship return offers. However, there are still opportunities for lateral hires or for those pivoting from other front-office (FO) fields.
Networking is critical for breaking into IB, especially if you're coming from another FO role without internal transfer options.
Firms Known to Recruit FT Analysts:
Boutique and Middle-Market Banks: These firms often have more flexibility in hiring FT analysts compared to bulge brackets. Examples include:
William Blair
Stifel
Houlihan Lokey
Duff & Phelps
Needham & Company
Signal Hill
Bulge Bracket Banks: Some bulge brackets may have limited FT spots, especially for laterals. For example:
Goldman Sachs (Cross Markets Group)
Citi (select groups may have 1-2 spots)
Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) (limited openings)
Jefferies (still recruiting in some cases)
Specialized Groups: Lazard FIG (Financial Institutions Group) has been noted to recruit laterals, with Superdays typically in mid-to-late September.
Key Strategies for Pivoting:
Networking: Build relationships with bankers at your target firms. Regular follow-ups and informational interviews can help you stand out.
Storytelling: Be prepared to explain why you're pivoting to IB and how your current FO experience translates to the skills needed in IB.
Targeted Applications: Focus on firms and groups that are known to hire laterals or have open FT positions.
Additional Notes:
Some firms may still be hiring for FT roles depending on market conditions and internal needs. Keep an eye on job postings and leverage your network to uncover hidden opportunities.
Smaller boutique firms or regional offices may have more flexibility in hiring candidates from non-traditional backgrounds.
If you're serious about the pivot, start networking aggressively and tailor your pitch to highlight transferable skills from your current FO role.
Did FT recruiting a couple years ago and remember that DB, HW and BlackArch all have dedicated FT processes. Jeff and Cantor both also had alot of stuff open if I remember correctly. FWIW, I would almost exclusively focus on MM or banks where your school is a target. Trying to network your way into a BB / EB FT, while doable, is next to impossible if you dont have banking experience because youre going up against kids with really strong banking internships.

For someone at a reputable LMM IB coming from a semi-target how would that change
