Golf - Essential skill for a career in IB?

If a senior banker never played or had any interest in golf, would this likely hurt their deal sourcing capabilities? If so, do you all think this will continue to be an essential skill in the future (for the "next generation" of IBers)? I know this might seem like a trivial question but I'm genuinely curious as I have never really been interested in golf.

No, I don’t think so. I don’t think most people have time to golf or had the money/time to golf before working. If you’re asked to play and you never have before, my recommendation is to just keep it simple: slow down your swing and aim to target. Even if you’re not technically gifted if you can hit straight and keep up I doubt anyone will care. But overall I’d highly recommend it. In my opinion there’s no better way to get some fresh air and see some green outdoor space considering many of us are urbanites glued to desks. I try and play whenever possible.

Sorry to tell you this bud, but if you have never played golf don't expect to slow your swing and aim to a target and hit the ball decently, you will prob miss it ahahah. My advice would be to say you have never played because every golfer can tell how long you have been playing and if you lied.

Play golf because you love the sport. Play golf because it’s something to do on the weekends with your friends. Play golf because you’re interested in learning a lifetime sport. Play golf because you like hitting on the cart girl. Please for the love of god do not play golf because you think it will make you a better senior banker... that’s a tiny aspect of it, but if you do choose to play golf for that reasoning just remember to pick up your ball after your 8th shot, it’s proper etiquette to the foursome behind you.

freshman at a target with 2 handicap, how much will golf help me recruit next year based on your experience?

Hey I’m a 2 handicap as well and was not on the varsity golf team at my school (had some lower level D1 offers but turned them down because they were all at crappy academic schools). The golf thing is a nice talking point in interviews. It won’t land you a job but you will run into many bankers who are golfers and will be impressed with your handicap and want to talk golf in the interview so good way to make a connection with someone. I put golf and my handicap in parentheses in my interests and bankers that were golfers always brought it up. Most people assumed I played on the varsity team initially but I went to a school that had a top 10/15 golf program with many pros on the team and some guys that are big names on tour just funny because some people don’t realize how competitive it is and low handicap doesn’t necessarily equate to a golf scholarship. Anyways also I’m a 3rd year now and since I’m the best golfer on the team I’m the go to invite for when a VP can’t make it to a golf outing with a client. Been to a few of our clients charity scramble golf events and been invited by our MDs to play at their club when they bring a client. Pretty good deal.

But as others said, golf isn’t necessary to advance your career in banking. I’ve had plenty of VPs/directors/etc who sucked at golf or never played. If you’re not good no one will really care as long as you keep up and don’t slow down the group too much. If you’re bad, be bad quickly. Never understood why 20+ handicappers are taking like 5+ practice swings. What exactly are you rehearsing lol majority of the pros are pretty fast if you watch too. 1 or 2 quick practice swings, line up, hit. No reason to play so slow especially if you’re no good

Thanks a lot for useful reply. Wow, glad it is working out for you. If I will get an offer, I will make sure to hit the desk with a lot of hours in the driving range under my belt. Hope you are enjoying it!!
