Got HR's email but offer was retrieved

Hi guys,

Things became tricky today.
Today in the morning I got an follow-up email from HR asking whether I am still open for the IB SA position I interviewed before. The IBD is in one of the bulge bracket banks and the superday for that position was about one month ago.

I replied to welcome any possible opportunities. In the afternoon I got a email offer from the HR with the standard congratulation format. After like ten mins I found the offer from the HR was retrieved and followed by another email asking me to ignore the offer email cuz she is still waiting for the approvals from seniors.

Now I am with great anxiety... Anyone has any thoughts on it? Did this kind of situation ever happen elsewhere? Does "waiting for seniors' approval" mean they are still seeking for better candidates?

You're right. One week after the superday I didn't hear anything back then I just decided to let it go. Now the worse case is still I have to let it go. LOL... As the second choice there is usually no room to push through but to wait it out, but I'm wondering whether it is such a coincidence just after the HR offer me the position within 10 mins the first choice became available...

Sloppy on behalf of HR. Its hard to tell whats going on because it could be a number of things, but I'd say there's back and forth among the decision makers about who to give the offer to and the HR person isnt completely in the loop.

I'm not familiar with IB's hiring process, but for most cases when HR sends out email asking the availability, does it just go directly to the person top on their waiting list, or the HR just select a bunch of candidates as targets?

Could be an honest mistake, could be them getting slick. Ultimately there's not much you can do about it, but I totally get feeling hugely anxious.

Yeah... the moment I got the offer I called my parents immediately. Then the HR retrieved the offer. Now I am not sure whether to phone up my parents again to tell them the current situation or just wait until I get the final confirmation.

Just wait. You probably don't want them being anxious in addition to your own anxiety. Maybe give the HR contact a follow up email tomorrow?
