Got Terminated - what's next?

I am very lucky to attend a target university that has representation in most bulge brackets and a good number of elite boutiques.

I will be a senior and can recruit full-time in IB with my background. Have to admit though, I am having an existential crisis about my fit in the industry, so I need to rethink what I want long-term. Really have no passions outside finance and my interest in finance has now dwindled.

I can re-recruit high finance with my internship and school background or decide to pursue something healthier and with long-term prosperity options such as law (not T14). This is a personal decision, of course, but would it be better to just do 2 - 3 years in finance in a new role and decide for a career-swap afterwards? Since I have the prerequisite knowledge and experience, I think this makes the most sense. Then again, this industry is ruthless and there is no guarantee I can find a role in this economy, especially one in which I am not working absurd hours..

You got let go from your summer internship at the… end of the summer? After asking for an extended leave of absence, again during a summer internship?? And now you’re reflecting back on your storied career in the field and offering “advice to juniors in the industry?!?” You sound histrionic and needlessly self-important. You were probably more of a pain in the ass than you were worth, and that’s why they let you go.

It was not a summer internship. I do not understand where you got that from. No need for the personal attacks. Be mature.

So to clarify…

You did SA 2022 and received an RO to start in July/August 2023. However, you decided to pursue a leave, which pushed back your start date to July/August 2024. They did not approve of this leave and rescinded your RO. Am I getting this right? Many people here are confused and we can’t really help you if we don’t understand what the situation actually is.

Did you seek the firm’s approval to push back the start date BEFORE officially declaring your leave of absence?

This post makes 0 sense

It makes sense. I am just keeping it broad and non-specific. I can understand why you might be confused since it is a rather unusual occurence.

Law will not be any better. Have many friends in the industry who all tell me what it is like.

Same culture as banking and in many cases worse as you’re clocking endless billable hours, have enormous debt, law school is very rigorous and is a rate race just to get good grades, all to enter into an even worse rat race once you get to a firm that will also dispose of you in a heartbeat. Even if you’re not doing big law and go in-house, you then become a cost, which is slowly being phased out to automation (not every part of law of course). And your interests seem to be in business / finance so why not explore a bit more / different firm?

Given your interest in entrepreneurship , working at a start up may be a good fit.

Also - good to get a few years of work experience under your belt before pursuing grad school or deciding what direction you want to take your career in.
