GPA needed for Internship with BB
Hi everyone, I go to a target school and I wanted to know what GPA would be necessary in order to get my foot in the door by attaining an interview with a top BB like Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan. I know that work experience, club activities/leadership on campus, and other factors obviously play into this kind of question, but I wanted to just get a general sense of what GPA I should strive to attain in order to position myself for an internship with one of these firms, given that I'm currently attending a target school (non-ivy league).
At my target non-Wharton business school (think NYU, Michigan, Georgetown) the minimum GPA to be competitive in recruiting seemed to be a 3.7. At my school basically all the kids I knew had relevant finance internships as well, and a decent amount were involved in clubs. A few kids with 3.6 range GPAs have broken in to lower tier BBs, but unless you have a 3.9+ you’re definitely going to need to network extensively. Feel free to PM me.
BB IBD summer analyst GPA cut-offs in Asia/Europe/Middle East (Originally Posted: 07/22/2017)
I'm a student at a top target (Ivy/Stan/MIT) with a 3.3-3.4 GPA looking to apply to IB summer analyst roles outside of the US, specifically in London, India and the Middle East. I was wondering if anybody had any idea about cut-offs for those regions.
I know that in the US, a 3.5 GPA is sort of the mandate (which is not to say that people with lower GPAs get in), but from what I've seen outside the US (and to some extent, London), people with very low GPAs tend to get internships. I'd appreciate it if someone could share some info on this. Thanks!
Idk for sure, but you can't do much about your gpa now anyways better to just network and not worry too much about your gpa
What's a passable GPA for GS/MS? (Originally Posted: 01/14/2015)
When someone working at GS/MS asks for your GPA, what is the cutoff that is in their minds and that will allow you to get considered?
3.5's pretty much the consensus answer, but certain factors (e.g. non-target school, non-traditional major) may bump that higher...
These are huge organizations, so it depends on the person and if they like you or not. If its HR, probably want at least a 3.5 or something, since its easy to filter our (or the computers will do it). If its other professionals, who knows? Usually the higher the better. But if you strike up a good conversation with someone, they probably won't care THAT much if they like you.
And that's what will get you the interview. Them liking you, since it will be a personal/employee referral rather than something cold.
Good Luck.
What if it's a cold email to someone high up and they ask for your GPA?
If I say 3.5, is that usually good enough? It's usually the ones who had very high GPAs (3.8-4.0) during their degrees that tend to ask
Keep in mind this also varies by school. I know a friend at a GPA-deflation school with a 3.2 that got an offer in JPM IB. And then I have friends at state schools who are told their 3.7 GPAs didn't stack up to the competition. So, you know...
Usually above 3.6 is safe. Above 3.9 is not necessary
Without networking prob 3.8+. With networking prob 3.5+.
If they interview at your school then they specify a GPA for your school. Else 3.5 is the thumb rule to not get rejected on applying. Of course if you know someone then the number might go lower
I go to a top target, and for the people who actually get offers, GS tends to have 3.9+ and MS tends to have 3.7+. People who have 3.6+'s do get interviews, though.
