GS Titles

I have seen certain folks jump from Associare to ED directly. How are they able to skip a level? Shouldn’t they become a VP first? Can someone please shed light on this.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not typical to skip levels in the career progression at major banks like Goldman Sachs (GS). The standard hierarchy usually follows a structured path: Analyst → Associate → Vice President (VP) → Executive Director (ED) → Managing Director (MD). However, there are rare cases where individuals may jump directly from Associate to ED.

This can happen due to several factors: 1. Exceptional Performance: If someone demonstrates extraordinary skills, leadership, and value to the firm, they might be fast-tracked. 2. Business Needs: Sometimes, there are gaps in senior roles, and the firm may promote a high-performing Associate directly to ED to fill the void. 3. Lateral Hires: In some cases, individuals may join GS from another firm at a higher level, bypassing the VP title. 4. Unique Circumstances: Internal politics, relationships with senior management, or specific project successes can also play a role.

While these cases are uncommon, they highlight the importance of consistently delivering value and building strong internal networks.

Interesting. Always thought it was AN > AS > VP > ED > MD at GS

Same here: is it VP > MD directly?
