Happy Hour advice

SA here. Our bank has happy hours and social events planned where we are plopped in with all the FT bankers. I’m relatively introverted and do not like “networking events” to begin with, although I am fine with one on one calls or chats.

How important are these events, as long as I’m occasionally chatting with bankers and not standing in the corner alone? What is a good approach for these? What are some good convo starters? (These are usually just a little awkward and forced overall, in the sense that every SA is “trying to connect” with bankers)

Happy hours and social events are more important than they might seem, especially in a competitive environment like banking. They provide a chance to build rapport, make yourself memorable, and show that you can fit into the team culture. Here’s how you can approach them effectively:

1. Importance of Attending

  • Visibility Matters: Even if you’re not the life of the party, being present and engaging shows you’re a team player. Standing in the corner alone can give off the wrong impression.
  • Cultural Fit: These events are often used to gauge how well you’d fit into the team dynamic. It’s not just about your work; it’s about how you interact socially.

2. Good Approaches

  • Prepare Topics: Have a few light, non-work-related topics ready. For example, weekend plans, hobbies, or even asking for local restaurant recommendations.
  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: People love talking about themselves. Questions like, “What’s your favorite part of working here?” or “How did you get started in banking?” can spark meaningful conversations.
  • Be Relaxed and Observant: If you’re introverted, focus on quality over quantity. Engage in a few meaningful conversations rather than trying to talk to everyone.
  • Use Humor and Be Approachable: Don’t take yourself too seriously. A relaxed demeanor can make you more approachable.

3. Conversation Starters

  • “What’s your go-to drink at these events?”
  • “What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?”
  • “What’s been the most exciting deal you’ve worked on?”
  • “Any fun plans for the weekend?”
  • “What’s one thing you wish you knew when you were starting out?”

4. Tips for Introverts

  • Fake It Till You Make It: Laugh at jokes, nod, and use engaging gestures like the “thinking pose” to show interest.
  • Find a Wingman: If possible, team up with another SA or colleague to help ease into conversations.
  • Set Small Goals: Aim to have 2-3 meaningful conversations rather than overwhelming yourself with the idea of “networking.”

5. Final Note

Remember, these events are not just about networking but also about showing you’re someone people would enjoy working with. Relax, have fun, and don’t overthink it. Even small efforts can leave a lasting impression.

Attend, don't get drunk / embarrass yourself. Ask insightful questions about people's careers, day to day activities ,etc. Anything that shows you have an interest. If you join in on a discussion and it's more casual (e.g. about sports or travelling or anything that is non-work related, just tune in and share some thoughts or experiences you have);

People want to see that you are capable of having a normal discussion and you're a decent guy. Nothing complex.

Just enjoy it - it'll make you get more comfortable to do things outside of your comfort zone. It's good.
