Help me make an important career decision

Hi all:

I have a tough decision to make and was hoping for some advice/insight. Thanks in advance.

Background on me: Senior at semi-target, 3.5 GPA, finance major, 740 GMAT. My ultimate goal is to land a job in investment banking (goes without saying), preferably before getting an MBA, but I know I can get into investment banking after an MBA, too.

Here goes,

Next fall I can either:

1) Get a Masters in Accounting Degree from the University of Texas- I know that all the Houston energy IB groups recruit from the program and I also know that getting a job in Big 4 accounting (I would shoot for transaction advisory services or consulting), while not IB, will give me good exit opps, good work experience for admissions into a top 16 MBA program, and a strong chance for getting an investment banking job down the line.

2) Work for a Fortune 500 company as a financial analyst in its treasury department. Here are some snippets fro the job description:

"This position completes financial analyses of varying complexity related to X's capital structure and capital markets activities on a project basis. The position is also responsible for making recommendations based on these analyses and presenting the recommendations to senior management.

This is a position with a high level of visibility among the executive management team of the company. We are targeting an individual with outstanding analytical and communications skills. It is likely that the individual filling this position would, if successful, be a potential candidate for rotation to other positions within the X's corporate office or in one of its subsidiaries

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Completing capital structure analysis Playing a key support role in capital markets activities Performing ad hoc financial analysis and strategic planning Assisting with Treasury operations "

What do you guys think I should do, keeping in mind my long-term goals? Do you think that the F500 job will position me well for a top MBA program and for breaking into IB down the line?

Thanks

Yes I agree with you that UT is good for IB and 99% of the time I would take it over a F500 job. The only thing making me reconsider is that the F500 sounds like it will be interesting as it involves capital structure and financing decisions and capital markets involvement. Not to mention exposure to senior management.

I know that I would not be able to lateral into IB from the F500 job, but it does seem that it would get me in to a top MBA program, perhaps even more so than a Big 4 accounting job.

F500 job, why add another degree on your resume, get some valid work experience > top 10 MBA > IB. instead of trying to go back to school with huge opportunity cost. plus you'll land an analyst position not associate with that UT masters.

although I agree UT's business is the best school out there!!!!!!
