How do you talk with with staffers from other banks about lateral?

Pretty straightforward. I am a 6-month analyst(recent grad). I have some calls lined up with staffers in other banks, three so far across BB/EBs. I know how the calls were done when I did FT/SA recruitment, but I'm kinda lost on how to do these calls now? I mean, it's obvious why I am calling; I want to lateral to a better bank, but what do you talk about and say? Not like I can ask them how their job is anymore, so appreciate tips, possible questions, or how to frame these conversations to be fruitful and effective, towards getting some movement towards eventually lateralling

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach these calls effectively:

  1. Frame the Conversation with Purpose: Start by expressing genuine interest in their bank and team. Mention that you’ve heard great things about their group and are eager to learn more about their culture, deal flow, and team dynamics. This sets a positive tone without immediately making it about you.

  2. Ask Insightful Questions:

    • "What do you think differentiates your group from others in the industry?"
    • "How has the team been growing or evolving recently?"
    • "What qualities do you think make someone successful in your group?"
    • "Are there any specific skills or experiences you think are particularly valuable for someone looking to join your team?"
  3. Subtly Position Yourself: After building rapport, you can transition into discussing your background. For example:

    • "I’ve been fortunate to gain solid experience in [specific area] at my current firm, but I’m really interested in exploring opportunities where I can [specific goal, e.g., work on larger deals, gain more exposure to XYZ]."
    • "I’d love to hear your thoughts on how someone with my background might fit into your team."
  4. Gauge Opportunities: Without being too direct, you can ask:

    • "Do you know if your team is currently looking to add analysts, or if there might be opportunities in the near future?"
    • "What’s the best way to stay on the radar for potential openings in your group?"
  5. Be Professional and Respectful: Remember, staffers are busy, so keep the conversation concise and focused. Show that you’ve done your homework about their bank and group.

  6. Follow Up Thoughtfully: After the call, send a thank-you email, reiterating your interest and appreciation for their time. If they mentioned any potential openings or next steps, politely follow up on those points.

The key is to strike a balance between showing genuine interest in their team and subtly positioning yourself as a strong candidate for lateral opportunities. Good luck!
