Breaking into Continental European Investment Banking (IB) often follows a structured path, especially if you're coming from a top school like Bocconi. Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Target Schools and Programs:

    • Bocconi is a strong feeder school for IB roles in Continental Europe, particularly in Italy and other major financial hubs like Frankfurt and Paris.
    • Other top schools include HEC Paris, LSE, and LBS. These schools are considered "target" institutions and provide excellent access to IB opportunities.
  2. Recruitment Pathway:

    • The typical route involves securing a spring insight program (1-2 weeks) during your first or second year. This is a key step in the UK and Europe.
    • After the spring insight, you aim for a summer internship. Successful completion of this often leads to a return offer for a full-time analyst position.
  3. Networking and Alumni Support:

    • Bocconi has a strong alumni network in IB, which can be instrumental in securing interviews and offers. Leverage this network for informational interviews and referrals.
    • Attend networking events, coffee chats, and firm presentations to build relationships with bankers.
  4. Internship Requirements:

    • Many European banks offer off-cycle internships, which are common for students in Master's programs or those with mandatory internship requirements. These internships can be a great way to break into IB if you miss the traditional summer internship cycle.
  5. Cultural and Language Skills:

    • Fluency in the local language of the country where you're applying (e.g., German for Frankfurt, French for Paris) can be a significant advantage.
    • However, many roles in major financial hubs are conducted in English, so strong English proficiency is essential.
  6. Key Considerations:

    • Age and experience are less of a barrier in Europe compared to the US. Many candidates come from Master's programs or have taken gap years.
    • Placement years and year-in-industry courses are becoming more common, providing additional opportunities to gain relevant experience.

By attending Bocconi, you're already on a strong path to breaking into IB in Continental Europe. Focus on securing internships early, building your network, and honing both technical and soft skills to stand out in the competitive recruitment process.

Problem with recruiting for IB in continental Europe is it’s very much geared towards masters students, unlike London. Bocconi is a great place to be, but top BB/EBs in Europe, though possible, are tough.

This is even more true if you do not speak a local language.

do you speak any European language? If not i think it is really really hard.

learning at 18/19 would be really hard to reach conversational/ work proficiency imo. I know people who got into GS Germany albeit not speaking german (they do speak other european languages) so I wouldn't say the chance is 0 but i would say its slim

I do know they would interview you in german in the german offices for BB

They also require fluency in Dutch/Spanish. Madrid will always require Spanish but Amsterdam is more like majority require Dutch.

Only place I’ve really seen that doesn’t explicitly require fluency (odds are like 50/50) is Zurich but that’s probably one of the more competitive places anyway
