How to deal with regret

I was accepted into UPenn when applying to colleges as an HS senior, but at the time I wanted to pursue medicine so I chose the cheapest option I got in which was another T20 that I got a merit scholarship at.

I am now a sophomore at a T20 and I want to do IB. I would say it is a semi target for IB, but it is def not a business oriented school.

I feel lots of regret as I could have gone to UPenn and gotten into IB easily. Now my chances are lower and I may get into a regional IB instead of NY as well.

How do I get over this regret? I feel as if I have severely hurt my business career; even if I get a top IB offer, I will not have the UPenn name which could have helped with connections in my future finance career.

Damn I was thinking just this after reading. OP this is great advice. You will likely succumb to the third option given there are far more implications to backtracking on convictions and choices you've made which need to be addressed if that's even entertained. However, it might be easier if you just accept that yes you were bright enough to be accepted to Penn and that you made a pragmatic decision which, at the time, made the most sense given financial reasons (which is 100% valid and important). It might not've been the best choice in hindsight if you feel that way but you made the choice and you need to work with the cards you dealt yourself. Feeling bad or regretful will only hurt your psyche / morale while searching for a gig or during an interview/networking call.

Also if you're at a solid T20 school which is sort of a core recruiting school, if you follow networking protocol which has been outlined by myself and others numerous times on this site there is no reason you shouldn't be able to land at least interviews for NY IBs regardless of what market they serve (ie. bulge, mid-market, advisory like PJT/LAZ/EVR, or tiny other boutiques)

Thanks so much guys, this really helped!

Yes, I'm still at a T20 school, and we are a target to regional IBs and we send a decent amount of people to regional IBs and NY. So I realized that even though it is not UPenn, if I grind I will still have a great chance and there's no excuse for me not to get an IB offer when there are people grinding from complete non-targets and getting an IB offer. I'm going to stop whining about regret and not choosing to go to Penn and move on and focus on the upcoming recruiting next semester, and if it doesn't work out, at least I tried my best and saved a ton of money.

Also, I'm def not going back to medicine lol.

You only entered your sophomore year and you're already making conclusions about what bank you will place into? Recruiting starts at the end of sophomore year, so you still have many months to prepare. Why are you trying to "deal with regret" this early? Sounds like you already gave up and want to use your school name as a scapegoat. I'm still a 1st year college prospect though, so what do I know.
