How To Go About A Friendly Follow-Up With A VP Of A Top Boutique

I met the VP of this investment bank in September and then I had a first round interview. Unfortunately, I didnt get offered another round because my technicals at the time were weak and I lack experience. Now, I have a PE internship coming up and I am confident I will receive an offer for the summer at a small IB boutique.

This place is the only bank I really want to intern at and hopefully work full-time afterwards. What do you guys think about emailing the VP letting him know what I have on my plate this year in terms of experience and letting him know that I really want the spot this place for summer 2021 or maybe an off-cycle internship? How would I go about this? What should I say? I want to show that since I received feedback I racked up two internships and that I am driven to work for him.

What year are you? 2021 summer internship would imply you are a sophomore?

Sophomore internships at top banks are difficult to get so wouldn't read too much into getting dinged. It's pretty early in the cycle so I'd probably recommend waiting till you have locked down a sophomore year internship and have some things to talk about from your PE internship.

Bottom line, don't be weird or desperate. DO NOT say anything such as this is the only bank you want to intern at, you are driven to work for him, etc. In a couple months shoot him a note to the effect of

"Hi VP,

I wanted to follow-up on our conversation from last fall and give you an update on what I have been up to recently. Since we last spoke, I've been interning at XYZ PE firm this semester and have gotten some good finance experience doing ABC. I was also able to secure an internship at DEF Bank for my sophomore year internship and am looking forward gaining some direct IB experience.

I was wondering if you would have 15-20 min for me to ask a few more questions about the firm and discuss the upcoming summer analyst recruiting cycle. Appreciate your time, thank you"
