How to network with BO/MO alum if they know I'm going for IB/Investment side?

I've recently been networking with alum in HR/MO/BO roles and it's been much more difficult to keep a conversation going. They know I'm going for an IB/Investment side internship as I send my resume and talk a little bit about myself at the beginning of the call. I'm not sure if I'm approaching this correctly but I know they aren't idiots and know what I want but I still want to have a conversation with them. Any tips?

Maybe tell them that you are interested in learning more about the culture of the bank, and would like to learn about their experience at X bank. That way, they can still know that you are interested in IB, but would still want to talk to them to learn about the culture.

However, I don't think this is a smart strategy. I think you should just reach out to IB directly, even if they are not alumni.

With your current strategy, you are basically just hoping that the BO dude is best buddies with someone in Ibanking, and will pass on your resume to him.

Network with IB from other schools, especially those in your geographic area or other non-targets. Ask the FO alums from your school to connect you with people in their office. BO/HR people are not going to have hiring power or much IB involvement (unless they are an HR recruiter for IB)

Your response rate will probably be lower for non-alums, but they will be a lot more helpful in terms of getting connections and an interview

If they are younger/recent grads, I would try responding by saying you just wanted to talk to them to get some general recruiting advice because of some specific similarity you have with them (Example: "I saw on your LinkedIn that we both did freshman internships at a law firm, I know you are not in investment banking specifically, but I just wanted to get your perspective to see if it is worth talking about my law experience during a finance interview").

Then hold a conversation where the alum actually has beneficial advice to give to you, so that they feel like their time wasn't wasted, and in your thank you email you can ask if they have any emails of colleagues in the IB group.
