How to proceed with follow up?

Hi, all!

I applied for an early recruitment opportunity for a 2020 Summer Associate IBD internship at a big shop. I had 2 first round "fit" interviews, and a 2nd round interview that was a bit more technical. I thought it went well, but apparently I was mistaken. HR called me yesterday to let me know that they were not inviting me to the superday, but they were impressed with my work experience. They said that I needed to work on my technicals, but encouraged me to stay in touch and try again during the normal recruiting timeline in the fall. The HR rep told me to stay in touch with her, and let her know if I had any questions.

Should I follow up with my 2nd round interviewer with an updated answer to one of his questions? How normal is it to get a phone call rejection? Unsure exactly how to proceed as far as contact with my interviewers/current connections at the bank, and any help would be welcomed.
