How to respond to an email introduction

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. This is a stupid question but it’s my first time receiving an email introduction and not sure how to go about it. An alum I networked with introduced me through email to his MD at a boutique firm saying I would be a good fit to intern with the company. I’m not quite sure what I’m supposed to say in the email now? Also, should I cc him in the future email chain? Thanks!

Nope, the MD will not email you first. You need to do it. I've been in this situation many times, and I've never had the other person reach out to me first.

My advice is to respond to that email, and in the recipient, remove the original person's name, and replace it with the person that is cc'd

There's no harm in waiting a day or two because the MD may send you a message (15% chance) - but it's your choice and it won't really make a difference.

Reply to the email, in recipient bar address it TO: MD, and CC: Alum.

Example of what to write:

Hey ALUM NAME,

Thank you for the introduction - it is greatly appreciated!

MD NAME, my name is NAME, I'm a student at UNIVERSITY NAME and am very interested in your company. I know ALUM through our school's alumni network and he has been telling me how great the culture is in your group. I'd love to learn more - would you be willing to chat for 30 minutes with me over coffee some time next week?

Thanks, NAME
