how would you call your MD????

i'm a bit confused...
if you need to contact the MD of the group you are going to work with (but you haven't started working for him yet) for some administrative issue, how would you start your e-mail?
"hello, bla bla bla"
or
"Dear Mr. XXX,...bla bla bla"
He's a bit old but another analyst called him with his first name when I was there for the interviews, so I'm confused whether to be very formal or "relaxed"...
I have to send this e-mail urgently so I would beg for a quick response!
thanks!

I think it is okay to go with the first name. It really depends on the group. My group is really chill and it would be so weird if I refer to them by their last names. I think first names are ok.

Can't I just begin with a "hello!" avoiding names?...this is the recipe a friend of mine suggested...but he's not in ibanking yet...

You call someone (especially a person older OR more senior than you, in this case both) by Mr.XXX until he either tells you to call him something else or until you start working and feel comfortable calling him by his first name, because that is standard. That way you only look slightly too formal till he corrects you. If you go the other route, and call him by his first name immediately, it'll either go unnoticed and perceived as normal OR it'll be perceived as disrespectful. I rather take the better of the two downsides, that is, I'd rather be perceived as too formal as opposed to disrespectful.

I think you have 2 choices:

Dear Mr. X,

or

Mr. X,

Using the first name is not worth the downside risk. If he's relaxed, you'll have plenty of chances to call him by his first name later on.

You're a Greek God, so you can start with "Dear lesser being..."

Or you can go "Dear Mr. X".

As someone mentioned, you can always go on the first name basis a couple of weeks after you start work. If the MD is nice, he'll probably reply to you saying that you can address him by his first name.

Also, should you really be asking the MD about administrative matters? You might want to check with his secretary first....

Regards, Jeremy

hehehe ...the problem is I have not received the official offer letter yet, so I have no contact in the HR...and my MD was the one that contacted HR to get approval for the hire. Moreover, it was a detail that should be addressed immediately.

Well you've obviously met your MD before to get a hire. What did you call him before? Did he introduce himself as John or did he insist you call him Mr. Washington? Did you say bye John or bye Mr. Washington after your interview?
