IB -> MBA -> PE?

Incoming FT at BB, not interested in on-cycle but want to keep PE door open (ideally min. 1 year of IB associate under my belt, not concerned about prestige after IB). Was doing research and noticed not many who stay in IB pursue MBAs, for obv reasons.

Curious on opinions on doing an MBA after 5-7 years in IB, at which point I'd ideally be a snr associate or 1st year VP. Is it possible to secure a post-mba PE position at a solid MM / UMM fund? Or will it always be an uphill climb without buyside experience?

To those who did an MBA after banking, what did you pursue/what opportunities were available?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an MBA after 5-7 years in IB and aiming for a post-MBA PE role at a solid MM/UMM fund is possible, but it comes with challenges. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Post-MBA PE Recruitment:

    • Many PE firms prefer candidates with pre-MBA buyside experience. Without it, you may face an uphill battle, as post-MBA PE recruitment isn't as structured as pre-MBA buyside recruiting.
    • However, some MM/UMM funds may still consider you, especially if you have strong deal experience and a top-tier MBA on your resume.
  2. Timing and Role Fit:

    • If you pursue an MBA after reaching a senior associate or VP level in IB, you might be seen as overqualified for typical post-MBA associate roles. PE firms often hire associates in classes, and being older or more experienced can make it harder to fit into their structure.
    • Some firms might credit your experience and consider you for a senior associate or VP role, but this is less common.
  3. Alternative Opportunities:

    • If PE proves challenging, other post-MBA paths include corporate development, strategy roles, or even returning to IB at a higher level. These roles often value your transaction experience and MBA credentials.
  4. Considerations:

    • If PE is your ultimate goal, it might be worth exploring pre-MBA buyside roles earlier in your career. This would give you a stronger foundation for post-MBA recruitment.
    • Alternatively, you could lateral into a PE role before pursuing an MBA, as some professionals advance in PE without ever going to business school.

In summary, while it's possible to transition into PE post-MBA after a long IB stint, it will likely require extra effort and strategic networking. If you're set on this path, targeting a top MBA program and leveraging your IB experience will be crucial.
