To maximize your success as an incoming IB summer analyst, preparation is key. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Excel Skills:

    • Excel is a fundamental tool in investment banking. While you will likely receive some training during your first week, it’s highly recommended to familiarize yourself with Excel beforehand. The WSO Elite Modeling Package includes an Excel Modeling Course, which is a great starting point to build a strong foundation.
  2. Technical Knowledge:

    • If you don’t remember your technicals, it’s crucial to brush up on them. The IB Interview Course on WSO offers over 7,500 questions across 469 investment banks, covering everything from financial statement analysis to valuation techniques like DCF and LBO modeling. This will help you feel more confident and prepared.
  3. Learning on the Job:

    • While you’ll learn a lot on the job, being proactive and prepared will set you apart. A one-week training session might not be enough to cover everything in depth, so having a solid base before starting will allow you to hit the ground running.
  4. Recommended Resources:

    • WSO Financial Modeling Series: Free lessons on financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and more.
    • WSO Bootcamps: Consider attending the Financial Modeling & Valuation 2-Day Bootcamp or the Investment Banking Interview 4-Hour Bootcamp for hands-on training.

By investing time in preparation now, you’ll not only ease your transition into the role but also stand out as a capable and resourceful analyst.

Average Canadian. Why are Canaidans such hardos for no reason? I don't know what happens in Canada; but in the US, interns are mostly judged on attitude, being easy to get along with, and being willing to work hard. Nobody wants or is letting an intern touch a live deal or even pitch model. Your job is to allign logos, make decent looking slides, and maybe refresh some comps. Just have to have a positive attitude, be normal, and pretend you are interested in the job to get a return.

I mean those were all pre requisites for me as well but these were things that just helped me going in to the job. Im
Super grateful i was on a few live deals but i know that was a one off situation because it was a busy summer.

Also the intern class was evaluated based on technical capabilities as the summer progressed, but a positive attitude, willingness to work, and culture fit trump not being too technically advanced as long as u can demonstrate a “genuine” interest in the job
