Internally Networking in BB as member from different team

Hey all,

I'm currently working a part time role while in college in the retail banking space at BB firm in my area. Although I'm not based in the main office, I do have access to teams and the usual stuff the guys in the head office have.

I was curious what was the best way to internally network with people in the IB/CB teams as someone in a different team and different office. Would shooting a message on teams be unprofessional, or should I stick to cold emailing (but with our work email)? Although, this job is in retail banking (which I def don't wanna do after college), I have a previous internship experience in a MM.

I do know guys in the IB/CB look down on retail bankers, but it's honestly just a job I use to pay the bills of course.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some detailed tips for internally networking within a BB firm, especially when you're in a different team and office:

Tips for Internally Networking:

  1. Leverage Your Current Role:

    • Even though you're in retail banking, use your position to your advantage. Highlight your previous internship experience in a MM to show your interest and capability in IB/CB.
  2. Utilize Internal Communication Tools:

    • Teams Messages: It's not unprofessional to shoot a message on Teams. Start with a polite and concise introduction, mentioning your current role and your interest in learning more about IB/CB.
    • Cold Emailing: Use your work email to send cold emails. Keep them brief and to the point. Mention your current role, your previous experience, and your interest in transitioning to IB/CB.
  3. Build Genuine Relationships:

    • Follow up after the initial contact. Aim to build a genuine relationship rather than just seeking favors. Take your contacts out for coffee or lunch, and get to know them as people.
    • Send them articles or information they might find interesting. Find common interests, such as sports or hobbies, and engage in those activities together.
  4. Network Strategically:

    • Identify key people in the IB/CB teams who are involved in recruitment or have influence. Reach out to them and ask for career advice or insights into the industry.
    • Use LinkedIn to find alumni or people with similar backgrounds and interests. Send them a standard networking email and suggest phone calls or coffee meet-ups.
  5. Communicate Your Story:

    • Be able to communicate your story and reasoning for wanting to move to IB/CB in a compelling manner. Reflect on memorable experiences that have shaped your character and use them to build your narrative.
  6. Track Your Networking Efforts:

    • Keep track of who you spoke to, when you last spoke, and what you discussed. Use an Excel sheet to organize this information and follow up regularly.

Example Cold Email Template:

Subject: Seeking Career Advice and Insights Hi [Recipient's Name], I hope this message finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I currently work in the retail banking division at [BB Firm]. I have a strong interest in transitioning to the IB/CB space and would love to learn more about your experiences and any advice you might have. I previously interned at a middle-market firm, which solidified my passion for investment banking. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss your career journey and any insights you can share about the industry. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the possibility of connecting with you. Best regards, [Your Name] [Your Contact Information]

Key Points to Remember:

  • Performance on Current Desk: Continue to perform well in your current role. People talk, and a strong performance will reflect positively on you.
  • Strong Network: Having a strong network is crucial. Sponsors and mentors within the firm can help you navigate the internal transition process.

By following these tips and strategies, you can effectively network within your BB firm and increase your chances of transitioning to the IB/CB teams.
