Internship At Espirito Santos and Mid Tier IB'S
I wonder if any one could offer me some sensible and well meaning advice in relation to career prospects, market perception, quality of work and exoerience, pay!, and status of doing an internship this summer at a mid tier/boutique IB with a view to ultimately securing a permanent position.
By way of background I have 3 As at A level and read Law at KCL, where I took a first I am now at Bristol doing an MPhil/LLM in Law, with some econometrics. I will be upgrading to my PhD year this October. I have indepedently obtained funding for both parts of the degree, one being a national firm of solicitors, and the other a big four accountancy firm . From Octobera medium sized IB has agreed to fund the remainder of my studies at a rather generous level it must be said!
I previously wanted to be a Barrister at the Commercial bar, but for reasons I shall not bore , I have decided(somewhile ago) that I want to pursue a career in IB,or stockbroking(front office only). I have deliberatley not applied to any of the large/BB banks as I do not like the culture, ethos or dynamics of those organisations. I hear you say how do you know you wont like the culture!!? Firstly Dad is a senior MD at a BB, and I have two friends who have both in the last 12 months started as analysts at DB, and GS respectively.
Does anyone have a view as to what Espirito Santo is like GENERALLY whwn compared with Schroders and Rothschils. I have internships at all three but realistically can only do one of them! From what I have seen/heard thus far I am firmly that Espirito Santo is favourite for me, especially as my research directly feeds into the area in which they are undoubtedly market leaders. Further there culture seems more old school, and "relaxed". They also have many very senior IB's , with high profiles who are flocking there presumably to escape the huge amounts of regulation the big baks face together with the huge burecaurcy also.
In summary would I be mad to go elsewhere and keep looking , or should I go for Espirito Santo?
Finally I am particularly interested in Equity Research or general corporate advisory.
Your help and assistance is much appreciated!
