Is all TN / H1B hiring cooked?

Re: EVR thread from a few days back. Evercore was obviously a big hirer of Canadians especially on TN

Anyone have any other data points / are all usual sponsors (GS, JPM, other EBs) also not hiring for this cycle?

Thanks everyone!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the situation for TN and H1B hiring has become increasingly challenging, but it is not entirely "cooked." Here's what you need to know:

  1. TN Visa Challenges:

    • The TN visa process has become more difficult, with success rates dropping significantly. Previously, there was a 95% success rate for TN banking analyst applicants, but now it is reportedly below 50%.
    • Some banks have stopped filing TN applications altogether due to the risk of denials, which can negatively impact future applications.
    • Current TN holders are often advised not to travel outside the U.S. to avoid complications.
  2. H1B Visa Challenges:

    • The H1B visa process remains a lottery system with a success rate of about 33%.
    • Banks are cautious about hiring international students without a STEM-OPT extension, as the chances of securing an H1B are lower.
    • Some banks still sponsor H1B visas, but the process is selective, and candidates often need to be top-tier to secure sponsorship.
  3. Evercore and Other Sponsors:

    • Evercore has historically been a strong sponsor for Canadians on TN visas, but the current situation is unclear.
    • GS, JPM, and other elite boutiques (EBs) have been known to sponsor in the past, but policies may vary by cycle and candidate strength.
    • Some banks, like Wells Fargo and UBS, are noted for not sponsoring, while others may sponsor on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Advice for Candidates:

    • Network extensively with BBs and EBs to understand their current sponsorship policies.
    • Focus on excelling in interviews and building strong relationships with decision-makers, as individual advocacy can sometimes lead to exceptions.
    • Be prepared for a competitive process and consider alternative visa options if applicable.

While the landscape is tougher, sponsorship opportunities still exist for strong candidates.

Sponsoring at the analyst level has been cooked for the past few years it’s just now becoming more public. H1B is not cooked. TN is harder now. Evercore got caught. Don’t expect banks to sponsor TN for generalist roles analyst anymore unless you’re a very specialized person.

If you want to fix this just go to school in the US.

No one does it because it’s “the path”, they do it because you’re compensated significantly better and opens your doors to a lot more.

Toronto has higher taxes, lower comp, less interesting industries, and horrible exit ops

If you want to get paid less for working the same hours then don’t follow “the path”

I’m a Canadian working in Ib and I’ve still been getting interviews for l/s and pe associate roles in the U.S.
