Is it shunned upon for an intern to ask about the prospect of a return offer?

Would it be frowned upon to ask about my prospect of getting a return offer for next summer? I' m thinking of asking a co-worker about my status- we're really close so it wouldn't be out of the blue.

Thoughts?

Touchy but I think it depends how close you are with the person and also how you word it. Something like “how would you say my performance compares to previous years’ successful interns? Anything I can do to be more in line with that” during your midterm review or informally with your buddy later on in the internship etc,

As with all things in life, it’s how smooth you are with it.

I wouldn't ask anybody more senior than Associate for sure. I also don't think you should phrase it as "do you think I'll get an offer" or similar, be a little more tactful. Something along the lines of "how has my performance been" / "do you think I'm meeting / exceeding expectations" etc.

Bear in mind that it's also super tough for us actual employees to tell right now, given how hard it is to get a read on virtual interns combined with the uncertainty of how many people we're even going to need. I know my group hasn't decided on a number of return offers yet, for example.
