Is NIBC worth the time commitment?

Hey everybody,

I’m curious as to whether NIBC is worth the time commitment given the acceleration of timelines for SA 2026. While I understand it can be helpful for practicing techs, I’ve heard it’s only worth it if you place highly which requires a pretty immense time commitment. I imagine a strong NIBC pitch would require ~30-35 hours of work on my end (which I think is pretty conservative) which would also represent 30-35 hours of technical / behavioral prep missed over the highly valuable ~3-4 weeks of free time I’d get over winter break.

Does anybody want to weigh in on this? If it matters, I’m at a semi-target that doesn’t have a ton of alumni where I’m recruiting so ways to differentiate myself could probably be a bit more useful for me.

Thanks!

Participated in it last year and got relatively far. Have also spoken to winners from top teams in previous years.

In regard to recruiting-- most offers you see come out of that competition (as far as placement of the winners) is more correlation than causation. Those who place well already know their stuff, and half the time they already have their offers by the time finals roll around. NIBC is not facilitating their offer by any means in most cases, its typically just an exercise for top talent to get reps in and receive decoration in turn.

My advice to you is to pursue it if you're a freshman and are able to coerce talented upperclassmen to your team. Otherwise, if you're a sophomore or above-- the only reason to pursue it is if you have the desire to get reps in and potentially win. If you're mid-recruiting right now, probably better to prioritize studying techs and networking ahead of January-March.
