I don't know about bmw's...only some models are worth it in my opinion. The M series are mechanically respectable, if over priced. Otherwise, they feel almost disconnected from the road; too much technology in the newer models imo.

But Jaguar, I agree. The more recent models don't look great, and anything older than a few years is in the shop constantly. Every Jag owner I know has ended up regretting the purchase, but that is just my experience.

For a lower cost, you can get a nice Cadillac CTS-V. Similar price, get a much stronger car in the Skyline GT-R. If you want luxury, go classy with a Merc S Class or AMG if you want something sporty.

I am not a huge fan of Audi personally, but they make fine cars. Most people I know that have bought Audi's are happy with their purchase, but they generally like the company in the first place.

BMW's are for old people who don't enjoy driving...they're quickly becoming the luxury equivalent of Toyota; dumbed down for mass appeal. Having worked for BMW, I was sorely disappointed after driving the majority of their new vehicles.

I would take a Jaguar XJ Supersport every time instead of an S-Class or 7-Series. Although, if it was compared to a Maserati Quattroporte, this would be a different story.

And it's Bimmer, not Beamer you tool.

My friends that have owned Audis hate them. They were always broken and in the shop. But they had A4s and A6s, so I am not sure what the higher up models are like reliability wise.

IlliniProgrammerI dunno. I think a used Ford Mustang is a great car. What's so bad about a Jag?

Haha, I don't know what it was, but I always had a thing for a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse. No idea why. Ah, non-luxury autos...

I first read it to mean he was equating Jags to used Ford Mustangs, which I found funny given how Ford managed the brand when they owned it. Then I re-read it and wasn't as amused by the actual meaning.

Aston Martin and Jaguar shared a designer at some point...

I'm not too fond of Jaguars (def don't hate them like you though, lol), but I love Aston Martins (design-wise).

Love BMWs, don't really care for Mercs.

I love the Ferrari F458, but if I were gonna get a supercar, I'd love to get that new Porsche 918 hybrid that just went on sale (718 hp and 78 mpg...be still my heart, lol)

I'm more a fan of the RS5

I saw the top gear piece on the XJ vs S-Class. But at that level, you are paying for the sticker as much as the machine. If you want a driver's car, there are so many better (and more affordable options).

The S-Class just conveys respectability in my mind, like a cheaper rolls.

And Illini, I'm with you 100% on cars. I don't think I could sink 100k+ in car unless I were so ballin' that anything less would be detrimental to my career. All MD's can't be Buffets in a STS, just like you can't really wear a Timex after a certain level despite Paulson's preferences.

I like the Mustang, but want a 4-door RWD. Looking at a used ~06 Charger on the lower end, Pontiac G8 on the high end. Hah, it really sounds funny to be talking about those cars in the same post as "xj vs s-class".

Well my mom has worked for GM my whole life so all I really want is a nice Cadillac. If I'm going to buy a foreign car, I'd want it to be an Aston Martin... n I like vettes. There are certain models that look like white trash cars but I've always loved stingrays.

I am a BMW lover and would never buy one of the current models (E90+). An E60 M5 maybe, but that is the newest I would go. I don't think anything will ever match the classic beauty and road connection of an E30/36 M3.

I also enjoy the look of older Jaguars and even some of the newer ones. The XK is very nice. Mechanically Jags are certainly not the greatest, but aesthetically they do pretty well.

Honestly if i were going to spend pretty much 100k on a new jaguar xk i would just pony up the extra 20 grand and get an Aston Martin V8 vantage. They are faster, much better looking, and lets face it you sound pretty hard telling people you own an Aston Martin.

Vantages are awesome. If you had 120k to drop the R8 and ZR1 are nice too. The GTR is also pretty sweet for quite a bit less.

SB for you, good sir.

Today, Jaguar is a mere shadow of its former self. It's a brand that has gone through many transformations and exchanges of ownership. Its most recent acquiring partner has made an (horrific) effort at bringing the company back to its roots as an endurance racing GT manufacturer... The last time Jaguar competed and won Le Mans was with the Silk Cut tobacco brand back in 1990 when sports prototypes dominated the category.

Jaguar is a racing manufacturer through and through with 7 Le Mans wins to their name; racing is in their DNA. It's too bad that their heritage it not that obvious with their new owner. Jaguar is clearly having trouble finding a target market... it seems as if their newer models are meant to appeal to a younger audience or a more 'hip' crowd.

The company may have a shoddy lineup today, but so does most every other manufacturer: Ferrari doesn't make h-gate's anymore, Merc doesn't make h-gate's anymore, Porsche lost it's mega-hardcore edge in 1998, Aston Martin is a platform whore, Bentley is now the the "luxury" brand of VAG, Bugatti has turned to a marketing experiment, etc. All of these brands were originally built on endurance racing (Scuderia Ferrari being the exception; they were originally a grand prix racing team for Alfa Romeo), and today it's hardly evident... very sad indeed.

It hurts to see the world of sport cars and GT's turn to hollow marketing devices but that's just the reality. I personally do not acknowledge the new XF or XK as a Jaguar. The REAL Jaguar's are the racing greats like the C Type and the D Type driven by the racing hero's like Mike Hawthorn and Ron Flockhart.

In 1976, James Hunt broke the sound barrier through Eau Rouge only to retire before the event finished... following the race he had sex with three Belgian nurses at the clubhouse near La Source.

The new Jags are fucking money. They're amazing. Extremely cheap compared to 7 series / S class and drive great.

Jaguar had fell off the grid for a couple of years but recently the new one are money! They brought themselves back to life.

BUT you still can't beat an S-Class!

BMW > Mercedes > VW (audi lol)

BMW's new cars are simply phenomenal, the new 5 and 7 series are stunning and the interiors are far far more luxurious than Mercedes' and especially Audi's which just look like they stole the interior from a VW Jetta.

The M3, although due for a replacement is still the KING of the sports car segment, if you've ever really driven one like I have, you'll know that it is simply in a league of it's own. There is a reason that ///M is the leader and everyone else just plays catch up. Even Jeremy Clarkson, who despises BMW's recognizes that simply no one comes close to the ///M Division.

One thing I will say though, is the electric steering in the new cars is killing the driving feel (not handling, they're still superb there) but unfortunately, this is the way most cars will be going now due to the fuel savings possible from an electric steering rack.

Agreed. Theres nothing like an M. I challenge anyone to drive one and then try and tell me if anything within 50 grand of the sticker that can compete. I also think that BMW is quickly becoming the luxury car honda and I am beginning to look to other brands to try to be escape everyone flocking to BMW when they get a little change in their pockets. The first 2 are OK but the last one looks like my old VW Golf with a bit of wood thrown in. My girlfriend has a Q5 and within a week of me sitting in it I managed to snap off the cup holder and break the little storage flap in the dashboard.

IlliniProgrammerIronically, Ferrari stole its design from the VW Beetle.
IlliniProgrammerAck, meant Porsche.

Ferry (Ferdinand) Porsche Sr. was chief designer of the the VW Beetle and founded VAG. His son Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was instrumental in designing the 911.

VAG and Porsche have shared a close relationship throughout history. This was put to the test when Porsche quit racing at Le Mans after their 1998 win in the premier class so Audi (a VAG subsidiary) could start a prototype racing program and not compete with one another on the track. In return, Porsche received development help on the Cayenne. Notice that the Cayenne shares the same platform as the VW Touareg and the Audi Q7; this is due to the close relationship both manufacturers share with each other. Also, over the last few years VAG has been buying up pieces of Porsche.

You may also know that factory Porsche drivers and factory Audi drivers are constantly loaned to one another because of this relationship. Last year's Le Mans winners were actually a trio of Porsche factory drivers on loan to Audi to help assist in winning the biggest race of the year.

In 1976, James Hunt broke the sound barrier through Eau Rouge only to retire before the event finished... following the race he had sex with three Belgian nurses at the clubhouse near La Source.

Jags used to be ugly and british looking - all but the yucky teeth. I think they're sexy now - better looking than what Audi has in the pipeline. Would never buy either one though because i love to drive and in that regard you just can't compare them to bmws. bmws are performance vehicles. If you've ever pushed a 3, 5 or 6 on a windy road, you know what i'm talking about. I've driven 911 turbos and a few ferraris (430s, new 458), granted i didn't really PUSH them because I likely would have killed myself and my father, but still nothing compares to the connection between driver and road that a bmw facilitates.

As for the comments about the Ms - Jeremy Clarkson put it best: buying anything other than an M3 when you're looking for a sport saloon would be like buying a war game that isn't call of duty. Can't wait to see the next M5.

Jeremy Clarkson also said the Audi RS4 was the greatest car he'd ever driven including the M3. Just saying.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

Jaguars always break down and the replacement pieces are nearly impossible to find.

StudiofanQuestion, to all of you guys who love the M3 and other 50kish BMWs, what do you guys think of the MB E350 coupe vs the M3 or BMWs offerings?

They're totally different cars. The M3 is a race bred track demon that grips like a falcon. The MB E350 is a soft, barge like car with a fairly small engine. You could compare the C63 AMG but even then, the AMG cars are just Mercedes' with big engines.

Don't forget to include the classic Italian brand MV Agusta. They have more constructors championships than Aprilia and Ducati combined.

I would also list Gilera in there as one of the great Italian manufacturers.

I find that hard to believe...jk, I am obviously being sarcastic.

To the guy shopping the m3 against the e coupe: Do you care at all about power and handling? If you want a cushy ride that will be enjoyable on a nice day on a straight road go with the E and it will probably put a smile on your face. On the other hand if you want to really have fun in a car, go with the M - it will give you a new found respect for engineering.

mfoste1i dont think jags are all that bad, however they arent the top luxury vehicle. I think bmw and mercedes have a step up on them. Personally, I will never buy a bwm or benz (a jew thing). Right now I drive a volvo s40, pretty decent regarding safety, lux, snow driving. When I get some cash reserves built up il like to get a lexus ISF
Don't take this the wrong way, but you really can't get over something 70 years ago that never happened to you personally? This may be comparing apples to oranges, but that's like being unwilling to use Aetna for insurance because way back when, it's parent company insured slaves for slaveowners in the Americas.
