Jobs that increases your chances of getting an internship
I'm about to get into college at Texas Tech(good school for IB??) this fall, and currently work as a Cashier at H-E-B. I was wondering if my current job was enough to increase my chances of getting an internship, or are they better jobs out there(e.g bank teller, assistant manager at H-E-B). Lets assume I do the same amount of networking as the average intern
I believe you're thinking about it wrong.
You're job is not going to land you a professional IB internship, it's the skills and interest for IB for a specific company that will help you.
You can land a job as a bank teller but that doesn't tell me why you want to go into investment banking.
You need to have a good story on why you want to go into IB and what are you doing to prepare for that, even with a cashier job.
I would say your priority should be attending as much informational sessions as possible for the company as well as networking with the employees.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the reply. Haven't really thought about it that way

It's your story more than anything for BBs, but your local IBs/search funds/PE shops are the best thing you can do. Also, financial analyst roles in the verticals you're interested in can always help. Like I said though, it's all about the spin more than anything.
I thought this said Texas not Texas Tech - only 1 person every 4 years from your school is gonna break into IB (at best) - try to transfer
Intresting take. I heard about a couple students from the school who made it into IB. Apparetnly from their linkedin they had a near perfect GPA and had a really extensive network. I'm yet to contact them.
Just look at LinkedIn xray - If I were committed to banking and I went to Tech, I would either transfer or change my focus to commercial banking and try to lateral post-MBA.
First of all, wreck em. you are gonna need to transfer or network like crazy. working as a bank teller would be good for commercial banking, but not really relevant to IB. Any management position looks good for just about any job, however getting an internship, unpaid is fine too, at a BB or small PE firm would be ideal.
