I'm lateraling back into banking as an Associate (having left IBD for a couple years) and interviewing with 2 Associates and 2 VPs. Any tips particularly for interviewing with the Associates who are younger than me? I assume it will be more conversational / fit based. Thanks.

Just curious, what have you been up to since you left IB?
I hear associate hiring is on fire at a few places, you getting interviews easily?
Doing a startup for a bit too long. Realized I don't want to stay in it forever. It's been pretty difficult to break back in.
As an ex-analyst interviewing for associate positions out of bschool, 90% of my interviews were focused on fit and trying to understand my rationale for going back into banking. I just checked my ego when I interviewed with people who were younger than me, even though they would try to assert their seniority in odd but annoying ways.
Yeah how did you deal with that strange dynamic then? I know associates often have a chip on their shoulder.

Banker 88 - surprised you aren't getting a ton of calls for interviews. If i recall, you were at UBS. In my experience, questions will be light on technicals (ensuring you aren't to rusty) but more on understanding your rationale for wanting back in and why leaving in 1st place.
Bags the question - why go back to banking and not do VC, LMM PE or corporate development? Goof luck in any case.
Corp dev. Culture is toxic, work is entirely different than what I'd been led to believe and I miss the day to day dynamics of banking. Feel pretty strongly that I need to hit the eject button now rather than riding this thing out any further.

I'd assume it'd be largely focused on your deal experience, responsibilities at your current BB and most importantly why you're looking to lateral from your current bank to theirs.

I'm about 6 months into my A1 stint and looking to lateral. I've worked on a few deals, but only one that closed, and I came in on the tail end of it so didn't work on it too much.
I've heard that lateral interviews are more about your deal experience and what you did than just straight technicals/fit. Is that the case, and if so, how much detail do they expect you to go into on your deals? Also, how much are technicals still included in these interviews? Are they harder technicals if so, and what would they be?
For someone as green as you, yes some techs. Mostly fit once you pass that 1-year mark / get a deal on your sheet (then they just ask deal points, multiples, dili. points, etc.).

I posted about this in the Investment Banking subforum but realized this is probably the more appropriate place.
Recently, I did an interview at a BB investment bank with the staffing vice-president of the team I was interested in. I would be coming in as an associate from another bank. The interview went for more than an hour. To my surprise, it was almost entirely technical, with minimal pleasantries and "culture" or personality discussion.
I sent a thank you note. Soon after, I received a response, thanking me for coming in and notifying me that he'd contact me if they decide to look outside the firm for an associate.
To further muddy the situation, I did not interview as part of a formal process.
How should I take the outcome? Thanks!
my opinion... I wouldn't expect to hear back.
It sounds like he wasn't blown away by the interview (it happens to the best of us), but he will keep your candidacy handy. So just forget about it and continue your search. Don't let it bother you cuz not much you can do at this point.
I don't think it sounds so negative, and the fact that he responded quickly seems like a good sign. That said, your best bet is always to assume the worst and put your energy into finding other opportunities in the meantime.
