Learning languages (Spanish)

Hi all,

Going to have 2-3 months off soon and always wanted to become fluent (understand B2-C1) level in Spanish. I am already conversationally fluent. Any tips? How do you guys learn languages ? Especially interested in going from intermediate to advanced.

Secondly, one of the hurdles I have is that a lot of the content I consume (news - BBG, TechCrunch // podcasts - invest like the best, rogan, Naval radikant, Tim ferris, VC podcasts like sequoia and a16z..) are not available in Spanish and I haven’t, so far, found high-quality media on business, tech and personal development that would rival their English counterparts. What are you guys listening to?

Lastly, I was wondering if I should write some stuff in Spanish to exercise that muscle. Have you tried to write in a foreign language ? How did you go about it? How did that help you?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and insights for learning Spanish and improving from an intermediate to an advanced level:

Tips for Learning Spanish:

  1. Immersive Experience:

    • Consider studying abroad or participating in an intensive language program in a Spanish-speaking country. Immersing yourself in the culture and language can significantly boost your proficiency. Unique and challenging environments, such as Korea, Hong Kong, Cape Town, or Moscow, can provide valuable experiences due to cultural and language barriers.
  2. Writing Practice:

    • Writing in Spanish can help solidify your language skills. Taking writing classes or practicing writing regularly can improve your grammar, spelling, and overall language proficiency. This is crucial as strong writing skills are essential in finance and other professional fields.
  3. Consuming Media:

    • While you may find it challenging to find high-quality Spanish media that rivals English counterparts, try to seek out Spanish-language news, podcasts, and other content. This can help you get accustomed to the language used in business, tech, and personal development contexts.
  4. Language Skills in Professional Contexts:

    • For professional use, such as covering the Spanish market or LATAM, achieving a limited working proficiency can be useful. However, becoming 100% bilingual might require living in a Spanish-speaking country.

Additional Insights:

  • Importance of Language Skills:

    • Language skills are highly valued in various professional contexts. For example, Mandarin is particularly valued due to its difficulty and widespread use. Similarly, Spanish is widely spoken and can be beneficial for international business.
  • Study Abroad:

    • Studying abroad can be a transformative experience, helping you learn about different cultures and yourself. It can also enhance your language skills significantly.

Writing in a Foreign Language:

  • Writing in a foreign language can help you exercise and improve your language skills. It forces you to think in that language and can improve your grammar and vocabulary. Regular practice and feedback from native speakers or language tutors can be particularly beneficial.

By following these tips and immersing yourself in the language, you can improve your Spanish from an intermediate to an advanced level.
