Making friends

I feel like an idiot posting this but whatever. How do you guys make friends?

Context: In college in my 2nd year, I had to live off campus which messed up some of my chances ay making initial connections. Everything feels super cliquey now and I cant feel like I cant join a pre existing group. Ive been focused on doing well at school and recruiting- both of which have yielded good results, social life has been the exact opposite.

But now I'm stuck i feel like i just cant talk to ppl. Was at a party, I just couldn't vibe with anyone. It’s weird cuz I’m great at networking w ppl so am I missing a piece of the social puzzle.

I sound super autistic, but- any advice on how to get better?

Feeling stuck socially is more common than you think, and the good news is, there are actionable steps to turn things around. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to help you build meaningful connections:

1. Start Small with Shared Activities

  • Join clubs, meetups, or recurring activities that align with your interests (e.g., sports, fitness classes, or even niche hobbies like chess or coding). Repeated exposure to the same group of people makes it easier to form connections over time.
  • Examples: Rec leagues, gym classes, or even study groups. Consistency is key—seeing the same faces repeatedly helps break the ice.

2. Leverage Your Networking Skills

  • Treat socializing like networking but with a more relaxed approach. Prepare a few light, fun questions to break the ice. For example, at a party, ask, “What’s the most random thing that’s happened to you this week?” or “What’s your go-to guilty pleasure show?”
  • Small talk is your gateway. Once you’re comfortable, transition into deeper conversations.

3. Be Proactive and Take Initiative

  • Don’t wait for others to include you. Invite classmates or acquaintances to grab coffee, study together, or attend events. Even something as simple as asking someone to lunch can open doors.
  • Remember, friendships often require effort and follow-up. If you vibe with someone, don’t hesitate to ask for their number or suggest hanging out again.

4. Get Comfortable with Yourself

  • Social anxiety often stems from overthinking or low self-esteem. Practice being okay with who you are. Confidence grows when you stop worrying about how others perceive you.
  • Tip: Take a public speaking class or join a group like Toastmasters. It’s a great way to build confidence and improve conversational skills.

5. Be Shameless About Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

  • Strike up conversations in casual settings, like waiting in line or at the gym. Yes, it might feel awkward at first, but many people appreciate the effort.
  • Example: If you’re at a party, find someone standing alone or in a smaller group—they’re often more approachable.

6. Focus on Quality Over Quantity

  • You don’t need to be friends with everyone. Building a few strong, meaningful friendships is far more rewarding than trying to fit into every group.

7. Consistency is Key

  • Friendships don’t form overnight. Keep showing up, keep engaging, and over time, you’ll find your circle.

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Socializing is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice. Keep putting yourself out there, and you’ll find your people. Good luck!

Legit just talk to people. Also, it sounds like you're trying to go into conversations with an agenda, with that agenda being to make a friend. Don't. Just go in with the sole intention to have fun in every conversation. It'll make you more natural in conversation.

I’m a senior graduating this semester and I’m also an RA so I’ve heard this story plenty of times from my residents over the past few years. The best advice I have is to JOIN CLUBS. Even something you’re vaguely interested in; sign up and come to the meetings, introduce yourself and make sure they know you’re new. You’ll have a shared activity to connect over and worst case scenario you will learn whether you like/dislike the hobby. It’s super annoying and definitely have to go through some iterations, but all you need to do is find just one or two people that you vibe with and they could be with your for life. Good luck bro, you’ve got this.

Go the gym and ask for a spot, or join the boxing club. You make friends with dudes real quick after punching each other in the face for an hour.
