Masters at LSE - Does the course matter for recruiters?

Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend just got into LSE for a masters in accounting, organizations and institutions. I currently live in London and she's from another European city. I'd love it if she could study here but she is worried that the course is not as strong as Msc in Finance or Msc in Finance and Accounting. Her ultimate goal is IBD, but she wouldn't mind audit for a couple of years and then move into industry and eventually move up within the finance department(CFO is ultimate ultimate goal). She's worked at a Big 4 in their Valuation and Business modelling team, so she has relevant experience.

Do IB recruiters care which course you study? I think she could easily get into audit since she has previous Big 4 experience, but what about IBD?

Thanks in advance.

Why in the world, would you go from Big 4 Transactions advisory into audit? The transition usually happens the other way around. That V&BM exp (presumably EY?..) will probably help her land a similar job which can be leveraged to transition into a corp. development role or an FLDP at a F500.

Or if she's really smart, she can leverage the V&BM exp straight into an Analyst job at a bank or boutique.

She's afraid that her accounting knowledge isn't as strong, so if she ever wants to move into FP&A and move up from there she'd have a hard time. I always told her that Valuations is more transferable. Do you think the Msc in Accounting from LSE could help her transition to IBD? Would employers even look at her with that degree?

Thanks

There are a couple of people with a Msc Accounting & Finance from LSE at my BB (in FO IBD). That's about as much as I can say on that topic.

But I do know that audit is unlikely to enhance her accounting skills by much. Maybe she can consider doing an ACA to improve her accounting skills. IMO, this is far more valuable than audit exp for a future FP&A role.

As a big 4 auditor you study for the ACA in the UK.

blackboots, On balance i would say that the Msc finance courses have little between them. I feel that the reason Finance has better employment prospects than Accounting and Finance is because the average candidate applying to that course is higher rather than a result of the course itself. I read a review online saying that the courses based on finance are pretty much exactly the same with regards to modules.

Put "London School of Economics Student Review #2" into google with quotation marks and you will find a really good review from an american student of his year at LSE.
