Minneapolis Apartment Suggestions

Hey Monkeys, moving to MN for a full-time analyst position this summer. Wondering where you would suggest living. Thanks for the help. Cheers.

We have an office in Minneapolis. I’ve been to it and in all honesty the city is showing the after effects of the unrest. There has been talk to sell the Minnesota office outright and allow a permanent work from home situation for many reasons. Safety is a concern among clients and employees. There was a murder in the parking garage we contract with. And you don’t have to look hard to find bad news.

That said, there are decent areas to live with young professionals. NE Minneapolis had an explosion of microbreweries. It’s a great area with lots of city charm, but not the unsafe element. I was told Uptown used to be the spot pre pandemic as it’s right off Lake Calhoun and has bars, clubs and restaurants. Edina is an ok suburb nearby. The joke we get told is the best place to network for IB/PE is at an Edina HS football game on a Friday night. The Lake Minnetonka area is hard to beat in the summer months.

I don’t know about much else. Stay the F away from North Minneapolis and most of South Minneapolis and anywhere along the Lite rail. We fly into MSP and instead of taking a direct tram ride from the airport to the office, we now have to Uber entirely due to safety concerns.

that's dicked up, really terrible for anyone who is visiting the city for the first time and horrible representation of the city to visitors. Really unfortunate.

I lived in Minneapolis for 2 years, the first in Uptown and the second was the North Loop. Uptown is definitely the better spot right out of school in my opinion. A much younger crowd, good amount of bars, and a decent food scene (atleast for Minneapolis). It feels less like a city as it is somewhat residential, which I actually liked. Another thing I would mention is that having the lakes right there was something I really enjoyed while the weather was nice for a run/bike/walk, which is something I did not anticipate caring about at all.

The North Loop is nice as nearly everything is brand new but I found it a bit manufactured, without much culture. The commute is quick which is nice but I found myself leaving the area more frequently. It is also more expensive and in my opinion more of a late-20s neighborhood.

The last neighborhood that a lot of young people live in is the Northeast, I spent little time there but those who did live there loved it. Think it is supposed to be a tad more laid back and hipster, which is that is your thing might be interesting. So I would look between Uptown and Northeast, but whatever you do, do not live downtown.

Talking about the city itself, there are definitely some great aspects of living there. Public transit is pretty quick from any neighborhood to the office, lots of green space and parks, surprisingly cultural food scene, great brewery options, and lots of hot blondes. That being said, quality of life had definitely taken a step back due to the crime and homelessness. It seems like the city is mis-managing itself at the moment, not sure how this will play out longer term (I haven't been there for ~1.5 yrs).

@WolfofWSO and @bolognapogna are spot on.  As someone who grew up in the Twin Cities and who has worked in downtown Minneapolis my entire career, I would go with Northeast but Uptown is another good option.  The North Loop is expensive and not safe after 10pm.

Prior to George Floyd, Minneapolis was a great city.  Afterwards, not so much.  Things do seem to be slowly improving though.  The recent increase in police presence on and around Nicollet Mall seems to be helping, at least during the workday.
