Modeling

How do I start to learn how to model I did 400 guide a while ago but now need to put it into practice I have case studies and hate listening to WSP or adventis since I feel like I’m just copying rather than learning. Should I review all the basics again or just spam case studies and learn as I go like new accounting adjustments or projections?

To effectively transition from theoretical knowledge to practical modeling skills, here's a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Review the Basics Strategically:

    • If it's been a while since you went through the 400 Guide, a quick review of the fundamentals (e.g., financial statements, DCF, LBO, and M&A basics) can help refresh your foundation. Focus on areas where you feel less confident rather than redoing everything.
  2. Practice with Case Studies:

    • Dive into case studies and modeling tests under realistic conditions. For example, as suggested in WSO threads, pick a public company, grab its 10-K, and build an LBO or DCF model from scratch. This will help you learn by doing and uncover gaps in your knowledge.
    • Set a timer to simulate the pressure of real-world tests, as this can help you build confidence and improve your speed.
  3. Learn Through Iteration:

    • Instead of "spamming" case studies, focus on quality over quantity. After completing a model, review your work critically. Identify mistakes, refine your approach, and incorporate new techniques (e.g., accounting adjustments or projections) as you encounter them.
  4. Avoid Passive Learning:

    • If you dislike platforms like WSP or Adventis because they feel like copying, focus on active learning. Use blank Excel sheets and build models from scratch without relying on templates. This forces you to think critically and internalize the process.
  5. Leverage Free Resources:

    • WSO offers free financial modeling lessons and templates, which can be a great way to practice without feeling like you're just following along. These include lessons on financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and more.
  6. Simulate Exam Conditions:

    • As highlighted in WSO threads, practicing under exam-like conditions can help you overcome mental blocks and improve your performance under pressure. This is especially useful if you struggle with nerves during interviews or tests.

By combining a quick review of the basics with focused, iterative practice on case studies, you'll build both confidence and competence in financial modeling.
