Moelis NYC - 2024 - Group Outlook

Would appreciate any insight into the various groups at Moelis. Know there have been threads in the past but an update would be helpful. Specifically insight into technical experience, group culture, hours, buy side exits, anything else that may be relevant. Thank you

Culture is group dependent, hours are generally long across the board. Analysts can generally exit wherever they want; Moelis NY will get you interviews across UMM / MFs but, like any firm, it's on you to convert interviews into offers. Know A1s exiting to Centerbridge, KKR, Carlyle, CD&R, etc. Most teams do M&A in-house unless it's a public deal, where they'll bring in the M&A team. Moelis does a lot of sponsor sell-side work, so good chance M&A team is not involved, meaning analysts typically get plenty of technical reps. The cool part of Moelis (to me) is that they'll do plenty of mid-market / add-on deals in addition to your standard large cap deals, so analysts get experience working across the PE landscape.

Lmk if any specific questions.

What are the different groups in NY. Which ones to avoid during placement due to culture

CSA and M&A are both really sweaty. Obviously those two have some of the highest deal flow at the firm, so take that for what you will.

Any insight into exits for the current second year analysts (ones hitting the desk in 2022)?

Also how are the people in the tech team? Is there an uptick in deal flow since the SVB guys joined?

There's a pretty comprehensive thread on 2024 exits floating around, that's more accurate than what I could give you.

Tech is doing fairly well and is still ramping up given the market for deals rn. Juniors seem chill, seniors are somewhat hit or miss with how sweaty the teams are, but haven't heard of anyone really being toxic. They do a lot of middle market / sponsor backed deals with the occasional whale, which fits right in to the Moelis model. Have heard of some pretty strong assignments but we'll see if / how they convert. Generally sounds pretty sweaty, but maybe that's just Moelis.
