If you are talking about IB, then you are thinking about it the wrong way. Investment banking is not like a business where you can just grow into new areas, it can be a 5-10 year effort to develop a struggling group or a so-so group into a group gaining market share (due to long cycles of developing relationships). You should be looking for areas where the bank has been doing lots of deals in recent history and been on the landmark deals where applicable, it is a sign of strong industry relationships and likely indicator of good deal flow to come (note: this is assuming they have not had any big departures in the recent past, then that obviously changes things)

Most groups will do well at Morgan Stanley, because they are Morgan Stanley (hard to have a bad experience). I've heard M&A, Transpo, Healthcare (this one is slipping a bit), Media/Communication and NRG all have great deal flow.
