Move from MM boutique to EB

Hey folks, I’m making the jump from a MM boutique to an EB soon, moving up from analyst to associate. I’d appreciate any tips or recommendations on how to perform well in this new role and environment. Any insights from your experiences would be awesome. Thanks!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some key tips and recommendations for making the transition from a MM boutique to an EB as an Associate:

  1. Leverage Your Previous Experience:

    • Don't underestimate the value of your previous experience. Your background can provide unique insights and perspectives that can be valuable in your new role.
  2. Prepare for Interviews:

    • If you're still in the interview phase, focus on technicals, behaviorals, deal experience, and potentially a modeling test. Speaking to analysts at the firm ahead of interviews can help you understand the firm’s culture and expectations.
  3. Develop a Strong Story:

    • Have a clear and logical story for why you are making the move. This can help during interviews and also in your new role when explaining your background to colleagues.
  4. Focus on Core Skills:

    • As an Associate, producing flawless work, cranking out models, and managing data rooms quickly and accurately are table stakes. Ensure you are proficient in these areas.
  5. Think Critically:

    • Be able to think critically about investment theses and risks. This will help you stand out and add value to your team.
  6. Take Initiative:

    • Don’t just wait to be asked to do something. Be proactive in helping the team push their collective thinking and share your opinions confidently.
  7. Network Internally:

    • Build relationships within your new firm. Understanding the firm’s culture and networking with colleagues can help you integrate more smoothly.
  8. Seek Feedback:

    • Regularly seek feedback from your superiors and peers to continuously improve your performance and adapt to the new environment.

By focusing on these areas, you can better prepare yourself to hit the ground running in your new role at an EB. Good luck!

Hey, sorry I'm in no position to give advice (I'm an intern) but im going to intern at a boutique this summer. Just wondering how the process was moving from BB / EB and if you could share your wisdom about what it may look like starting a career at a boutique IB (50-100man shop) and what it may look like staying for the long-term or exiting into some other careers (corp dev, growth equity, private equity etc)

Sent my CV to the headhunter, got selected for the 1st round, it matched well with the team, succeeded the modelling test. It's all about an opportunity and being in the right place in the right time frankly saying, but also being able to capitalize on and leverage your existing experience.
