MUFG CIB [NY]?

I know that CIB at MUFG is basically Corporate Banking. Given the scale of MUFG's BS, I was wondering if MUFG's CB have a lot of lead left roles on deals or is it mostly just participation roles on deals in the U.S. (NY)? Evaluating a potential opportunity there so want to do some DD on the platform.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about MUFG's Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) in the U.S.:

  • MUFG's Presence in the U.S.: MUFG is making strides in the U.S. market, particularly after investing about $9 billion in Morgan Stanley, which has increased their exposure to higher-level deal flow.
  • Focus Areas: MUFG is known for its strength in project finance and is working on expanding its other arms.
  • Corporate Banking Roles: MUFG's corporate banking in the U.S. is involved in capital markets, with a focus on energy lending, among other sectors.
  • Deal Participation: While MUFG is a large bank with significant resources, it is still growing its presence on Wall Street. This means that while they do participate in deals, they may not always be in the lead role, especially compared to more established U.S. banks.

For a more detailed evaluation, consider the specific team and sector you would be joining, as experiences can vary widely within large institutions.

Basically banks like MUFG have a nonexistent advisory practice because they just aren’t known in the US. That’s why they have a strategic partnership with Morgan Stanley. SMBC has a similar relationship that is advisory heavy with Jefferies where they basically got rid of US-based M&A and ECM teams and focused exclusively on their debt products.

Anyways, working at MUFG will be like 15-30% investment banking work 70-85% corporate banking work with a good WLB and lower comp reflected in that difference of work. You will be trying to penetrate revolvers for IG level companies and trying to pitch on DCM products on the coverage side. These banks typically have good product side groups like DCM and LevFin that are closer to IB in terms of work, but anything on the coverage side will basically be corporate banking work.

Mizuho probably does the most IB-adjacent work out of all of the Japanese banks and the lifestyle and comp are reflected in that.
