My Thoughts On Diversity

If diversity was working for me I would support it, but its not unfortunately. So I'm diversity with a almost perfect GPA and work experience that you would expect from a sophomore halfway thru the year (student-fund, some small things here and there). I applied to a lot of diversity programs but noticed I didn't get in to any. I wasn't thinking too hard about it, it is what it is. but I came across someone else from my school who got the exact summit I applied to and denied in the fall, as well as several others. Worst part was that my experience at the time was more than theirs and it got me understandably salty. It made me think, even though we are both diversity, said person is "more diverse" than me. I'm a mix of diversity and non-diversity. and the person checks off more underrepresented groups than I do. I think this ultimately comes down to who looks better for company PR. Because they're more diverse, I'm struggling to gain any relevant internship while this person is landing several large names. The way I thought about it was this: Logic for example is half black, but you know for a fact every single diversity program would deny him cuz he doesn't fit the "image" they want. Not one company would say it, but they all would. They would much rather take the person who looks better for their image, but was born in the Hamptons with a household income of 8 figures. This is not even to mention that people cheat the system all the damn time.hypocritical, but I would support said person if I had my stuff secured, but until that point, I'm going to be salty. Let me know what you all think.

Well you are going to struggle mightily in life. You would support diversity if it “worked for you” but don’t now because it hasn’t? Additionally, your first response to why you don’t land internships is that another person “looks more diverse” instead of thinking about what you may be missing from your resume/application?

As I’ve seen so often with this site, your attitude is a problem. So many people like to point to finger at things they can’t change (ethnicity/race, connections, etc) as opposed to seeing what they can change. The interesting thing is that those things people complain about are usually the very small cases (I.e. a very small handful of people get in due to diversity, etc) vs the large things. It’s just so much easier to say you didn’t get the role because of something out of your control vs the things within your control.

I’m not trying to excuse the process, there are places with bad hiring practices, and there are opportunities that don’t screen in a completely fair way. But there are also so many opportunities out there; instead of focusing on how you are being “screwed”, focus on what you need to improve to land these roles.

Yea it was a bad day and ngl I kinda did this on impulse so theres a bit of an a frustrated tone that I wouldn't normally do. I do still think what I said has some merit, but yea experience obviously matters. I had more experience than said person at the time but it really looks like it comes down to luck a lot of the time.

Of course it comes down to luck.

That being said, if you have so little self control that you spent all this time writing up this rather unlettered screed to vent your feelings, that doesn't bode well for your future in the office.

We all know the problems that exist in diversity hiring.  You've made it clear that your first priority is that it helps you, not that it works in general, so we can discount your criticisms of the system as only being self-serving, but beyond that, if your response to failure is to blame others, you're not going to get anywhere.  We all feel that way occasionally... instead of ranting about it, scream into your pillow for five seconds or go for a run, and get past it

Mr. A&D time! And no I'm not talking acquisitions and divestitures. I agree that you can't change the first two immutable characteristics of race/ethnicity (even as much as Michael Jackson tried). But disagree a bit on your point because you can definitely change your connections and attitude so long as you're willing to make the effort. Otherwise, totally on point and what needs to be taught instead of playing blaming and pity party.

OP, we get that you had a bad day, and respect that you owned it, but if you went flying off the handle like that in the office? Not going to end well...Also not going to give you any grief, it's just one of those things you learn as you get older.

Why do you feel you deserve anything more than anyone else? Just cause of your ethnicity? You're going to struggle in life if you feel these BS shortcuts work.
