Need guidance/ career advice

Guys, I'm new here so please take it easy on me...

Background info: Age : 30 Bachelors: electrical/computer engineering, minor in math. Masters : currently enrolled in a Texas school for a masters in engineering management ( most coursework in economics, finance and management ), electives in energy finance. Work history : mostly software development and project management at IBM. Licensed project manager. I have started teaching myself financial terms and have a couple of friends bringing me up to speed on financial modeling.

For a while, I have gotten bored with the IT field and have become really interested in the energy sector ( energy finance), never really worked in finance or banking before but my school places well in the oil sector due to location.

Is IB far fetched for me since I don't have a banking background at age 30? What is my best route to break in? If I do apply upon graduation from grad school, would I be considered for analyst positions or would I have to compete with post MBA's for associate positions?

If you feel IB is far fetched, what other finance/energy careers would you recommend I look into? I would like something where I would make a decent living and doesn't involve a lot of traveling ( that rules out management consulting).

Thanks

Bearing, I wouldn't be opposed to going for an MBA but that would put me at almost 34 years by graduation.. What positions should I be looking at in the Oil and Gas field? Any other alternative career choices that I am not thinking of?

It depends on what aspect of finance you want to get into. Read the FAQ section to familiarize yourself. If you like the transaction and advisory side of the business then do banking, investment then you can look at HF/AM, if you like broking and following companies then ER, or if you like process/operations/structure then get a job in industry. You have a decade of work experience, ask yourself what you liked about the things you did and do that.

I like the transaction and advisory side of business but with my background, I am ruled out. I don't have much of an interest in equity research, I do like the investment aspect but what are my chances of getting into a hedge fund or Asset Management firm might be slim to none?

Process/strategy and such would fall under corporate finance right? What job titles would I search for? What's the earning potential like?

During my career, I really enjoyed project management and business development. Basically, I'd love consulting without the travel
