Networking into Coverage from Product

Here’s my situation: I did my SA stint this summer at a BB on their product floor. Had a strong experience culturally and signed on to come back for FT. Unfortunately, most if not all of the modeling I would be interested in learning is done out of the coverage groups. I am not sure if I want to eventually exit into PE / HF / etc. in the future but want to have the optionality to do so.

I have a generalist offer and can theoretically place into a different group. Do you guys have any advice on how I should approach the networking process in terms of timeline and how to spin my story? Additionally, should I keep my desk from this summer in the loop about this?
