Not converting/ delaying grad/ worth it. ?

Did a summer in IBD at GS/ MS/ JPM did not convert despite giving my all. Looking back I couldn’t have put more effort into it. Know ppl with similar feedback to mine converting.

i could delay grad to have a shot at 2 more summers, I do enjoy the job and come from a low socio economic background so would be a good job for me.

However I have lost all motivation for some reason and I’m scared of not converting again as I have realised there is an element of luck, headcount and what team you end up in.

i am already 23 and have never felt this lost. In the grand scheme of things I know I may regret but just wondering if worth trying.

this was my second IBD internship, first one had horrible group culture so no regrets on that but still looks bad on paper

anyone been in similar situation, pls any advice ?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. Consider Alternative Roles:

    • Related Roles: Apply for jobs or internships in related fields such as Asset Management (AM), Big 4 Valuations/M&A/Strategy Consulting, or Corporate Banking. These roles can provide valuable experience and potentially allow you to lateral into Investment Banking (IB) later.
    • Backup Options: Having a backup plan can reduce stress and provide additional opportunities if IB doesn't work out immediately.
  2. Networking and Storytelling:

    • Sell Your Story: Focus on crafting a compelling narrative about your background, experiences, and why you are passionate about IB. This can make you a more attractive candidate.
    • Networking: Continue to build and leverage your network. Sometimes, opportunities arise from connections and recommendations.
  3. Mental Health and Support:

    • Support System: Ensure you have a strong support system in place, whether it's friends, family, or mentors. The IB environment can be mentally tough, and having support is crucial.
    • Self-Care: Pay attention to your mental health. If you have a history of mental illness, carefully consider whether the high-pressure environment of IB is the right fit for you.
  4. Evaluate Your Options:

    • Delaying Graduation: If you decide to delay graduation, ensure you have a clear plan and understand the potential benefits and risks. It could provide additional opportunities, but also consider the financial and personal implications.
    • Alternative Paths: Explore other career paths that align with your interests and strengths. For example, if you have a knack for computer programming, consider roles in tech or startups.
  5. Reflect and Plan:

    • Introspection: Take some time to reflect on your strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Use this introspection to guide your career decisions.
    • Roadmap: Create a 3-year roadmap outlining your career goals and steps to achieve them. This can provide direction and motivation.
  6. Experience from Others:

    • Similar Experiences: Many people have faced similar challenges in IB. Some have successfully transitioned to other roles or industries, while others have found ways to make IB work for them. Learning from their experiences can provide valuable insights.

Remember, it's okay to feel lost and uncertain. Take the time to evaluate your options and make a decision that aligns with your long-term goals and well-being.

23 is nothing in the grand scheme of things. You have lots of time.

If you have one more summer left, it's up to you whether you want to stick with banking or try some other work which you are more sure about converting to full time after graduation.

In this economy, speaking frankly, I would do as much as I can to secure a job offer in the future, even if it meant delaying graduation. If you can't convert after the next summer, then I would delay graduation and try to get something in the summer or an off-cycle internship with a higher chance of converting to full time.
