Offer help JP vs HSBC

Currently at JPM in a business management / middle office role supporting client advisors on an institutional sales team. It’s mostly internal ops, reporting, and some light financial analysis.

Got an opportunity to move to HSBC for a front office institutional coverage role (also NYC). Pay + bonus are both higher, and the work seems a lot closer to real client coverage.

Trying to figure out if it’s worth leaving JPM for HSBC — would you guys prioritize role/function (front office coverage) over firm brand/prestige in this case?

If I am not mistaken, I believe the role is basically (similar to) Corporate Banking.

Really depends - what is your end goal?

Also, what was the process timeline like?

personally 100% would take the HSBC role, no question about it.

IMO, longer you stay in mid office / back office seats, the harder it is to move to FO. Can always lateral back to a "more prestigious" or name brand bank from HSBC later on - but making the jump to a client facing gig from a business management job is very challenging and opportunities probably dont often come around.

Thanks, appreciate the input. This might be speculative- but I have read that HSBC is pushing its institutional business in the US and deprioritizing retail and stuff. Last year they hired 20 year Goldman exec to lead the institutional client group. Given that it’s smaller than say JPM, is it fair to assume that there is more room for personal recognition and to be a “stand out/top performer” ??

Who cares. You’re focused on the wrong things here.

If you have any desire to ever do a client facing role at a bank (as you said you do in another comment), get out of the back office now.

The other note about moving to a front office iob in”4-5 years” at JPM is candidly idealistic - not saying it’s impossible or certainly wrong - but it’s far from a “likely outcome”.

I’d lean toward taking the HSBC role. While JPM may have stronger brand prestige, the move into a true front office institutional coverage seat is likely more valuable long term. You’d be getting closer to clients, revenue, and markets — experience that’s much harder to gain later from a middle office track. As long as the HSBC role gives genuine client exposure and ownership rather than just support work, it’s a smart career move.
