Payroll during two week notice period

I am planning to give notice (two weeks) to my bank soon and I expect to be escorted out on the day of my notice as we work in banking.

Are companies required to pay you during your notice period? I was talking to my former associate and he said that our company fucked him over by not paying for his notice period or his unused vacation days.

Check your contract. Typically unless it specifically says you forfeit the vacation days, they are legally required to pay them out. Notice period you will receive pay for as well. My best guess is your associate friend gave them no notice and said "today is my last day" which sometimes gives them license to not pay your vacation days either. When you quit send a very clear email to staffer and HR "My last day will be [date 2 weeks out]."

Also you're only escorted on the day of notice if you're going to a direct competitor in IB. If you're going to PE, corp dev, something else, you will work your notice ("work" used very loosely, you won't be doing much).

Hmm in that scenario I'd send that email making it clear your exit date is 2 weeks from now, but informally tell your staffer you're going to a competitor. It's their choice to have you not work the 2 weeks at that point.

Wouldn't want them to claim any conflict of interest if you didn't disclose, continued working, and they saw you at a competitor the next month. Not that they'd come after you, just reputational stuff.

If you can do it in person I would - but you're correct with informal notice, ok to tell the staffer you are leaving to X bank but wanted to give your 2 weeks notice at this point, and then officially quit via email a few minutes later. My point was just don't put the competitor in the formal notice since you are trying to get 2 weeks out recorded as your last day with HR (and thus with payroll)
