Personality types

I recently lateraled between banks but prior to deciding to make the move, I tried to spend some time thinking about what I wanted out of my career, what I thought a successful career looked like for me, and what I think I enjoy most in my daily job. I wanted to make sure I was comfortable staying in the industry and essentially doing the same thing that I already was at my prior bank. Overall, I liked my job but I definitely am not immune to the downsides of working in investment banking such as the long hours, lack of control over my schedule, demanding seniors/clients, etc so I wanted to make sure I would be happy with this decision.

One part of this introspection was to take a look some personality reports I had done when I was in college as well as take a couple new personality tests. I took the new ones prior to re-reading the reports I had from college so I didn’t sway the results.

I had taken the MBTI test in college and took the enneagram and big five tests recently. I found them to be helpful as a guide for thinking through what I like and what I am good at in IB and ultimately helped me decide to stay in the industry. I was somewhat surprised at how similar the results were between the tests and over time (freshman year to 5+ years full time), with all of them recommending banking as a good career type for my personality.

This got me thinking whether any of you have used the personality tests and found them useful, what your personality types are, and if they indicate that your personality is a fit for banking.

My types were: MBTI: ENTJ Enneagram: 3 wing 2 / “the charmer” Big Five: neuroticism (low), extroversion (high), openness to experience (high), agreeableness (high), Conscientiousness (high)
