Plastic surgery as an analyst

Thinking about getting a nose job. However, I am currently an analyst at a BB and am kinda worried about the reaction of my colleagues. I can handle the jokes and laughter, but I don‘t want to lose the respect of the people I work with over this. How bad of an idea is this?

Well I suppose you need to weigh up the likely responses from your colleagues and whether you have an effective way of downplaying it or making the initial phase pass so it becomes the new normal quickly. I would probably be proactive and tell people you are having it done so that it isn't such a big deal.

That vs the continuing embarrassment of looking like voldemort.

If you really want to go ahead with it, then just say:

"I was in a fight, you should see the other guy!"

In all honesty, it is up to you what you want to do with your body. But people may or may not have their opinions, which they can't publicly voice at the office anyway. All I can say is rhinoplasty can be very painful. Depending on the change you are planning, many won't even notice that much.

If you are insecure about yourself go for it. If you have the resources to go with a very good doctor you will have less pain and less recovery time. Just say: I couldn't breathe, had to remove bones (or what it is called) in my nose.

If there is every a time to do it, it would be during covid when you don't have to go to the office and/or can hide under a mask with plausible deniability

This. Assuming you are WFH, if you want to get work done, do it now. Does your firm require that you turn your camera on during video conferences?

Also, I know people who got work done in the before times and no one in the office really noticed. Bankers are pretty good about being too self-absorbed to notice what you've done.

just say that you fell and hit your nose...nobody will know you got a "nose job"....Particularly during WFH

however, breast implants would probably be a much better use of that money

just google it...you're welcome

This is not a joke, but when I was at GS many years ago, we had a VP who got a toe shortening surgery. Had never even known that was a thing.

Who measures toe length???

Yup, "deviated septum" is the medical excuse for a nose job. I've know a handful of people to do this. Some really had a deviated septum and got the benefits of a nose job also, others just wanted the nose job. Start laying the foundation now, complain about your breathing problems, toss in that you've always had issues with a deviated septum. Then make a big deal about how you're going to the doctor, you need surgery to get it repaired, what an ordeal this will be. Totally worth it though. You know. For vanity and all.

Except that septoplasties don’t result in outward changes unless your nose was straight L-shaped before. I got one (along with sinus surgery) myself and my nose looks exactly the same. You have to tack on cosmetic work and pay for it separately.  People just use ‘deviated septum’ as an excuse because they don’t want to admit that they got cosmetic surgery for whatever reason. If you get it and look better then great for you but you shouldn’t be ashamed to own it

I did it as a 30 year old male in private equity. Broke it as a teenager playing sports and never fixed it until later in life. Few people noticed, nobody seemed to care. I’m very happy with it, wish I had done it sooner.

If you want it done, go for it.

Only a few noticed? Doesn't it cause crazy bruising

Do it while you can still wear a mask. Nobody will remember what your nose looked like.

Knew a guy that got a rather extensive hair transplant in his early 20s.  dude had been balding aggressively since Jr. HS.

If you're not familiar with those, they are/can be extremely visible the first months post-op. There's just no way of hiding, and they look much worse before they get better.

But, noone gave him any shit for it. Guy was very open and direct about it, and basically just said that this was something he had wanted to do for a long time. If anything, some were even supportive. I think the outcome (whether or not people will bust your balls) depends on your own attitude.

Easy solution - just get a (very noticeable) boob job in addition to the nose job.

It'll (a) distract attention from your new nose and (b) nobody will make comments about it, unless HR is super chill about employees making overt comments to their subordinates on the size of their new jugs
